What ground is needed for Achatin snails

Snail Achatin is the largest land mollusk. Since snails’ original habitat is tropical, special conditions are required for their maintenance. The life of mollusks can depend on a properly selected terrarium and soil, not to mention the ability to multiply.

Therefore, before buying a new pet, it is important to study the habitat features and the rules for the selection of soil for Achatin snails.

Akhatinov snails require special conditions

Achatin snails will feel comfortable both in a small glass aquarium and in a special plastic container with ventilation openings. In any case, you need a heavy top cover, which will not allow the snail to escape.

The lid should have openings for fresh air.

It is necessary to take into account that the snails climb the terrarium walls well., therefore, the holes should not be too large. Otherwise, there is a high probability that the snail will simply run away, and it will be very difficult to find it.

It is undesirable to fill the terrarium with bark or sawdust, as the snails can be severely scratched. Mollusks feed on all kinds of waste in the form of cabbage leaves or lettuce.

There are several criteria in order to determine what kind of soil snails need. First of all, the ideal land for Akhatin should be loose.

This is important, as snails of this species bury their offspring in the ground. In addition, loose soil helps to protect the clam shell when falling from the wall or cover of the terrarium.

The soil must be well absorbed and hold moisture to maintain the required level of moisture. in the terrarium. The soil layer for Achatin must be at least 13 cm in order for the snail to hide under the surface for resting during the daytime.

Despite the specifics of the choice of substrate for Achatin snails, there are many options for filling for different tastes and budgets.. The most reliable and safe are:

  1. Coconut meal. The coconut substrate can be washed, dried and reused. Meal can be either pre-prepared or in the form of a briquette. In order to prepare the briquette it is necessary to fill it with boiling water, cool it, rinse it with gauze and dry it. After which it is ready for use.
  2. Peat. You can buy in a flower shop, but only after making sure that it does not contain flower fertilizers. The fact is that for snails, some of these fertilizers can be disastrous. If the soil was collected in the forest, it should be heated in the oven at 200 degrees for 15 minutes. This will get rid of harmful bacteria and parasites.

Coconut substrate for Achatina can be washed, dried and reused.

  • Plain land. Before falling asleep unprepared ground, it should be heated at high temperatures. The land for Achatin snails is considered a favorable environment, as it perfectly retains moisture and has a loose structure.
  • Peat moss Often used as a primer. Moss is able to absorb and retain moisture, and it is also an unfavorable breeding ground for bacteria and flies, which helps to maintain the purity of the terrarium and simplifies maintenance.
  • Dry leaves are rarely used as mounds, so they are most often mixed with moss or covered with a layer of soil. The fact is that the leaves absorb moisture poorly, which can harm the inhabitants of the terrarium. Collect the leaves in the autumn season. Before use, they are washed without using chemicals and dried.

    Fortunately, most types of soil can be found in natural conditions. The main rule when using natural fillers is pretreatment.

    This is necessary to ensure maximum safe and neutral conditions.

    There are types of soil that are strictly prohibited to use as a filler for a snail tank. Most often, the use of a prohibited substrate can lead to death or severe injury to the inhabitants.

    You should avoid these types of filler:

    1. Sawdust. They can injure the tender body and throat of the snail. In addition, if a splinter gets stuck in the body, inflammation will begin, leading to death. Sawdust is the culprit of white plaque on the sink, from which it will be impossible to get rid of in the future. Since the tree does not cope well with moisture, the remaining water begins to collect at the bottom. Then it stagnates and becomes the source of mold and midges.
    2. The sand strongly scratches the snail shell and body. In addition, getting into the stomach and intestines of a snail, sand clogs it, because it is not completely removed from the body. In addition, sand poorly holds moisture, stains and scratches the glass, which makes it absolutely unsuitable as a primer.

    Sand should not be taken as a primer for Akhatinov, since it strongly scratches the shell and the body of the snail

  • Pebbles. It is quite obvious that pebbles are not capable of absorbing water. In addition, it can injure thin shell, especially when falling from a height. Small pebbles are too heavy for Akhatin to bury her eggs in them or hide for rest.
  • Clay. Pure clay is not very suitable for a terrarium. In a humid environment, it absorbs all the moisture and turns into dirt. With such a terrarium terrarium will always be dirty. In addition, the cochlea will be difficult to move on the soaked clay.
  • It should be noted that prohibited substrates are also not recommended to be used in a mixture with permissible types of soil.

    As a decor, you can use a variety of natural elements, such as beautiful snags or tree bark. You can also decorate the soil with moss, but a day before being placed in a terrarium, it must be kept in purified water to get rid of all harmful living creatures.

    The main thing – to pre-disinfect all items.

    In an aquarium with adults it does not hurt to put a bowl of water.

    Additional care tips:

    • always keep the lid closed to maintain humidity;
    • Twice a month, the walls of the aquarium should be wiped with a damp cloth. It is forbidden to use chemicals with chemicals;
    • it is desirable to sometimes bathe pets under a slight pressure of warm water;
    • any soil needs to be changed once a year;
    • better to avoid sunlight on the walls of the aquarium;
    • electric heaters will help maintain the required temperature.

    For Akhatinov, the ground should be changed at least 2 times a month.

    In addition to the correct selection of soil, it is important to be able to handle it correctly. So, you should change the soil at least 2 times a month.

    If this is not done, an unpleasant smell and midges will appear, which will be difficult to get rid of. We’ll have to get used to the fact that the Akhatins constantly bury small, under-eaten pieces of food into the ground, which eventually begin to rot and smell unpleasant.

    It is not necessary to completely change the substrate, it can be washed several times with boiling water, then add a little fresh soil and loosen it. However, it should be understood that the replacement of soil in a container with laid eggs will lead to the death of offspring.
