Types and names of aquarium snails

Together with the fish in the aquarium can live and snails. Gastropod mollusks benefit the man-made reservoir, as they act as natural orderlies.

With excessive breeding aquarium snails pose a threat to the aquatic ecosystem, so you need to be able to care for them and control their number.

It is important to avoid excessive breeding of snails in the aquarium.

All types of aquarium snails benefit: they eat up the remains of food after fish, eat rotten parts of plants, fish excrement. Crawling along the walls of the aquarium, snails scrape off the patina.

Gastropod mollusks are an integral part of the biological balance of an artificial reservoir, but the main reason why aquarists lead snails is their decorative effect. The gastropods sink looks very nice in an aquarium, there are many types of snails, they all easily take root in artificial ponds.

However, these harmless mollusks can bring harm. The fact is that their excessive amount causes overpopulation of the aquarium, the lack of oxygen in the water develops, and fish and plants suffer from it.

Also a huge number of mollusks is difficult to feed, they begin to eat the plants.

As a result of the fact that some snails emit a lot of mucus, the water becomes dirty. Therefore, it is necessary to control the number of mollusks, periodically catching them, and also not to settle them in small aquariums.

There are many varieties of aquarium snails. All of them differ in lifestyle and require special conditions of detention.

They like the look in the store or take it from well-known aquarists. In no case can you put mollusks caught in open reservoirs into an aquarium.

The most common inhabitants of home aquariums are:

  • Ampullary – an individual with a shell of bright yellow color, reaching a diameter of 5–7 cm. At a water temperature of +17 – + 27 ° C, the mollusk lives for about two years, the acidity and hardness of water do not affect the life expectancy. Ampulyaria are omnivores, eagerly eat fish food, bread, and boiled vegetables. These mollusks have an excellent appetite, so they are often hungry. In search of food ampoules can dig the soil, digging out small plants. To keep the greens in the aquarium snails need to be further fed. Ampulyaria are sexually different organisms, but it is impossible to determine the sex of the mollusk. To get offspring, it is recommended to have several individuals.
  • Coils – snails with a flat spiral shell of a reddish-brown color with a diameter of not more than 3 cm. Live for no more than a year, reproduce very easily and quickly (mollusks are hermaphrodites), therefore this species should be settled in aquariums with predatory fish. Predators will control the number of mollusks (fish eat snail caviar attached to the leaves of plants). Coils are good sweepers, they can even live in very dirty water. Additionally, these gastropods do not need additional feeding.

Ampulyaria is voracious.

  • Mareese – in appearance it resembles a coil, but the diameter of the shell of the mariza reaches 6 cm. The color of the shell is coffee and milk. Body color in females is much darker than in males. Marise can create care difficulties for novice aquarists, as she demands temperature and water quality. The mollusk is incompatible with live plants due to the fact that it has an abundant appetite and uses everything edible in the aquarium.
  • Helena – the mollusk has a beautiful elongated shell, decorated with yellow and brown stripes. The shell length is about 2 cm. The life span of a snail is 3-4 years, young individuals need to create conditions in the form of loose soil at the bottom of the aquarium. Mollusks spend the first six months of their lives digging into the ground, adult specimens “travel” throughout the aquarium. Helena’s peculiarity is the ability to hunt snails of other species, therefore they are often turned on to fight uncontrollable gastropods.

Mariza is demanding to the conditions, so beginners should not immediately take up her breeding in an aquarium

  • Phisa – small snail with a beautiful brown shell and barely noticeable spots. The diameter of the shell does not exceed 2 cm, so the fiza can climb into the most inaccessible places of the aquarium. Some aquarists attribute mollusk to parasites, as it can eat even the toughest plants. The rate of reproduction of these gastropods is enormous, but because of the thin shell they often become food for big fish.
  • Melania – the shape of its shells resembles an ice cream cone. The length of the shell is about 3 cm, the color is gray-green. This mollusk refers to viviparous, breeds with lightning speed. Due to the fact that melania during daylight hours spends digging in the ground, it is very difficult to control the number of this species.

Melania snails breed at night, therefore, it is difficult to control this process.

The listed types and names of snails characterize inhabitants of artificial reservoirs. But there are types of gastropods that can be kept in an aquarium without water.

Land snails, which can be settled in an aquarium, are Achatines. These are unpretentious gastropods, the maintenance of which does not require large expenditures. They have a lot of advantages:

  • Omnivorous – pets eat fruits, herbs, cereals, fish food.
  • Large sizes – some species of mollusks reach a size of 20 cm.
  • Unpretentiousness – for the life of Achatina requires only regular food and a certain humidity in the aquarium. To make the pet feel comfortable, it is enough to pour a special soil to the bottom of the aquarium and moisten it periodically.

Snail Achatin suitable as a pet for those who are often not at home

  • Direct communication with the host – land mollusk can be taken on hands.
  • The ability to leave a pet unattended – if the owner has a need to leave, and there is no one to care for the snail, Achatina easily tolerates the lack of food and a change in humidity: the mollusk hides in the shell and waits for improvement of the surrounding conditions.

After studying the features of aquarium snails, you can easily choose the kind that will be useful for the ecosystem of a specific artificial reservoir.

Even those who do not have an aquarium with fish can get a land mollusk and enjoy a new pet.
