Types and conditions of domestic turtles

The land and sea turtles are one of the most popular pets. They like not only children, but also parents. It is easy to care for domestic turtles, they are unpretentious and able to take root in almost any indoor conditions.

Of course, in order for pets to feel as comfortable as possible, they need to provide the right care, food and care.

There are two species of domestic turtles that live on land – stellate and Central Asian. For the maintenance of the remaining individuals will have to get a roomy aquarium. Ground turtles feel great in the air, can move freely on the floor.

They are very friendly, they can be safely picked up and ironed.

The second name of the turtle is Indian. Most often found as a pet. It has a very beautiful appearance: yellow stripes around the perimeter of the black shell, tiny eyes and a long neck.

Stellate reptile is considered one of the most beautiful species of domestic land turtles.

The turtle is of medium size, its length is 25 cm for females and 15 cm for males.

Usually females are larger in size than males and can reach 25 cm in length. Turtles live from 30 to 80 years, so the baby will not have to worry that his pet will soon die from old age.

Living in captivity adds these creatures a few more years of life, because they do not have to defend themselves against predators and human actions. Basic rules of content:

  1. Star turtle is unpretentious to the conditions, for it you can not buy a special terrarium – it will feel great even in a large box. Its dimensions should be not less than a meter in length and half a meter in width. The height may be different, but it is better that the tortoise does not have the opportunity to get out on its own.
  2. It is necessary not only to clean the crate or cage regularly, but also to maintain the optimum temperature – from +26 ° C to +32 ° C. Turtles for home maintenance in the first place need care.
  3. If the air humidity is too low, the temperature in the room should be lowered, since the tortoise is a tropical animal that can die under conditions of excessive dryness. It is best to install additional heating under the box or terrarium, which can be turned off at night. It is also necessary to install a lamp with ultraviolet rays that help the turtle absorb calcium and vitamin D.
  4. It is better to install the heating lamp on the side so that the pet has the opportunity to rest in a cooler area and recuperate.
  5. In the terrarium, you must install a water bowl or saucer with clean water that needs to be changed every day so that it does not stagnate and save harmful substances. Young individuals need to be bathed 1-2 times a week in warm water (the main thing is not to dip their heads).

Feeding stellate turtles should be the usual vegetable food. Food for cats and dogs, as well as human food they do not fit. Additionally, you can add to food:

  • cabbage;
  • carrot;
  • lettuce leaves;
  • dandelions;
  • apples;
  • pumpkin;
  • sometimes melons, watermelons and bananas.

The main thing – do not overdo it, because the fruit can cause diarrhea. You also need to add calcium and vitamins.

The Central Asian turtle is distinguished by increased activity and loves to move throughout the apartment, so it is desirable to maintain the optimum temperature not only in the terrarium, but throughout the home. It suffers a good cooling, but it is best to choose the average temperature.

This type of domestic turtles has small sizes – from 15 to 23 cm, with females somewhat larger than males. Newborn babies are 2–3 cm long. The representatives of the breed are green or light brown in color with dark spots all around.

The paws and head are also brown.

Young turtles should be fed with mixtures of finely chopped vegetables and vitamin-mineral supplements every day.

Central Asian reptiles live on average up to forty years. In the absence of stress and proper feeding can live for several years more.

They love space, so the terrarium should be as large as possible. Turtles really like to dig.

In the summer they can build small pens right on the street. Aviary can be made square with sides of 2 meters.

It is desirable to deepen the fence as much as possible into the ground, so that the turtles do not have the opportunity to dig and escape.

If there is no possibility to equip an open-air cage, then in the warm season the turtle can simply be carried out onto the street in her arms and lowered to the ground (it is necessary to make sure that she does not run away). In the terrarium, you can cover the floor with coconut shavings or primer, so that your pet has the opportunity to dig during the cold season. The layer should allow the bug to dig inside.

At the corners, you should add a little flat stones, about which you can sharpen claws.

Reptiles love water, so they need to have a bath at least once a week: they should lower the neck in a small bowl of water and let it stand for about 20-30 minutes. A saucer with water or a drinker should be in the terrarium.

Representatives of the Central Asian breed feed mainly on grass – plantain leaves, dandelion, and coltsfoot. Vegetables and fruits should be about 10% of the diet.

You can include apples, pumpkins, occasionally bananas, strawberries. Feed pets rarely need.

For adults it is enough to get food once every 2-3 days, small ones – once a day.

The swamp reptile is one of the aquatic domestic species. It has a smooth round shell, usually yellow-green or black. Head slightly pointed, without beak.

The paws are dark, covered with light specks of yellow or white color.

The main food is fish, so it is preferable to feed with live small fish, which can be instantly launched into the aquarium.

Adults are quite large and reach a length of 35 cm, weigh up to one and a half kilograms. On average, they live 30–50 years, in some cases up to 70–80.

Very picky about the temperature, like heat.

The reptile aquarium should be deep and contain over a hundred liters. In the warm season it is better to let the pet into a clean pond so that he has the opportunity to swim properly.

Also next to the aquarium should be a spacious dry area where the turtle can warm up and rest.

Water needs to be changed regularly, as the turtles litter a lot while eating. Soil and decorative ornaments are optional. Small individuals like natural sunlight, which favorably affects their growth.

If possible, they should be taken out into the street during the warm season, even if there is no clean pond nearby.

In the aquarium also need to install a lamp with heating and ultraviolet rays. Its height should not be less than 20 cm, as there is a risk of getting burned. The temperature on land (under the lamp) should be 30-33 ° C, the length of daylight should be at least twelve hours.

It is not necessary to force a turtle to hibernate: in captivity it can be active all year.

For the normal development of the turtle you need a varied diet: fresh vegetables, greens, fruits and berries.

The European breed is considered to be predatory, not herbivore. Under natural conditions, its representatives feed on fish, shrimps, frogs, and worms.

In captivity, it is better to include fresh fish in the pet ration, sometimes you can even run live fish directly into the aquarium so that the turtle has the opportunity to hunt.

Small individuals eat every day, adults – every 2-3 days. European turtles overeat very quickly and do not control the amount of feed.

They need an ultraviolet lamp to absorb calcium in the body.

To understand what domestic turtles are like, you should meet a representative of the breed matamat. In length, it reaches 45 cm has a rather bright and unusual appearance. The upper part of the shell has a pyramidal shape, the head is flat and triangular, at its end there is a flexible nasal process.

On average, the reptile lives 50-60 years.

This predator, reaching a length of 50 centimeters and weighing more than 10 kg, feeds only on fish.

Matamata is omnivorous, she prefers food of animal origin. He loves mollies, goldfish, earthworms, guppies. Do not disdain even small mice and birds.

It is best to feed it by running a few fish into the aquarium: so the turtle will have a choice, and it will not lose its hunting skills.

Since the tortoise grows quite large, the aquarium should not prevent it from developing properly. Matamata is not as active as the European marsh turtle, but it’s better to choose more tanks for it. The main characteristics of the aquarium for the turtle species matamat:

  1. The aquarium should be deep – 200-250 liters.
  2. The acidity of water is 5.0-5.5, you can add a little peat or leaves of a tree.
  3. Water temperature – from +28 ° C to +30 ° C. It should be stable throughout the year, you should not lower it in autumn or winter.
  4. The soil of the aquarium should be sandy so that the turtle has the opportunity to dig into it. In addition, in the sand, you can plant plants and algae, which matamata accustomed to in their natural environment. It is better to add driftwood, since, due to its inactivity, the tortoise likes to lie at the bottom for a long time.
  5. Despite the fact that the turtle almost does not get out to bask on the land, the lamp above the aquarium is still necessary.

Matamata does not like being bothered. Any contact with a person is regarded by her as a stressful situation. The turtle should be taken in hands only to wash or transfer to another aquarium.

It is not suitable for families with children, where they get pets to play with them – matama does not tolerate such communication.

The cayman reptile is a large and unpretentious individual with sharp teeth. Pretty aggressive.

The advantages include the fact that the turtle eats almost any food, tolerates cold and temperature changes.

Known for its aggressiveness – when caught, the turtle actively defends itself, throwing its head far off on its long neck and biting.

You should not keep more than one individual in an aquarium, as snapping turtles attack (and can kill) even their close relatives. The same applies to small animals living in an apartment.

Turtles can easily attack a person, so you need to be extremely careful with them.

They grow quite large, which is why many owners try to get rid of them as soon as possible and pass them to the zoo. Getting a snapping turtle, you need to be prepared for difficulties, so that then the animal is not affected, no matter how dangerous it is.

The cayman tortoise is found in different colors: from soft cream to coal black. It has a large head and a powerful shell with numerous mounds and depressions.

It has very powerful jaws, at the sight of which you immediately want to disappear as soon as possible.

The weight of such a turtle on average reaches 15 kg, length – 45 cm, life expectancy – at least twenty years.

In nature, such reptiles are absolutely omnivorous and eat everything they can catch. In captivity, small fish, worms, crayfish, and crabs are perfect for them as food. You can add granulated feed, as well as plant food.

Adults are fed once in 1-2 days, small – once a day.

Since the turtle reaches a large size, it is better to keep it in a large aquarium or a whole pond. However, the climate in Russia is quite harsh (especially during the cold season), therefore the snapping turtle, accustomed to warm waters, can live in the pond only in summer and late spring.

The terrarium should be spacious so that the turtle can move more.

If it is possible to release a turtle in a pond, there should not be any other living creatures in it, otherwise everything will go to feed a new pet. And you will have to forget about ornamental fish, frogs and other creatures – the snapping turtle will eat everything that it finds next to it (even other turtles, no matter what size they are).

The cayman turtle is indifferent to the decor of the aquarium, the acidity of water and other things that are fundamental to other individuals. The main thing is to make her feel as comfortable as possible. For this, a sufficiently powerful filtration of water, since large turtles often eat and also often defecate.

If you do not change the contents of the aquarium in time, the leftover food will begin to rot, which is why the turtles can develop serious diseases.

Snapping turtles love to climb the walls of the aquarium. They also need a small plot of land, although reptiles rarely come to the surface.

In addition, you need a standard lamp for heating the aquarium and an ultraviolet lamp to improve calcium absorption.
