The maintenance of the tortoise at home and care for her

Busy people often prefer reptiles. Keeping a tortoise in an apartment with children will not cause unnecessary worries: it does not create noise and has practically no smell. Unlike the red-eared turtle, it does not need a constant change of water.

When creating the necessary conditions, the maintenance of the land tortoise will give the owners a lot of pleasure.

The maintenance of land turtles does not cause much trouble

The name of the reptile comes from the Latin word Testudinidae, which means tile or brick. Carapax is a hard shell that covers the back.

The tissue covering the abdominal area is called plastron.

The protective properties of the shell allow it to withstand a load that is 200 times its own weight of the animal. The size of adult turtles depends on the belonging to a particular species. In the wild, there are reptiles up to 10 cm long and giant representatives up to 900 kg.

The turtle shell is able to withstand a weight 200 times the weight of the turtle itself.

When choosing a pet should take into account the conditions of detention and the size of the reptile. Among all known land representatives of this genus, several species of turtles can be distinguished:

  1. Leopard. It is characterized by patchy colors of the shell and a body weight of 50 kg.
  2. Central Asian (steppe). Representatives of this species rarely grow more than 20 cm. This domestic tortoise is distinguished by a rounded yellow-brown shell. Unpretentious care made her the most accessible reptile among their own kind for home breeding.
  3. Asian It has two subspecies: brown and depressed.
  4. Mediterranean. Reaches 35 cm in length. Special fame acquired in European countries.
  5. Radiant. It is a rare species found in the Madagascar Islands. It owes its name to the correct yellow lines on the carapace.

You can keep far from all turtles in the apartment due to their size and the required conditions of care. The most accessible species for terrarium maintenance is the Central Asian tortoise.

Under natural conditions, representatives of this species can be found in desert, semi-desert and steppe areas. Most often such lands include the lands of Africa, America (North and South), Greece, Russia, Uzbekistan, Australia and others.

Life expectancy depends on the type of reptile and conditions of detention. They live in the wild for about 50 years, and domestic maintenance reduces the lifespan, which usually does not exceed 15 years.

With the preservation of the pet’s motor activity and proper preparation of the diet, life expectancy increases to 30 years.

Steppe land turtles listed in the Red Book need comfortable conditions while living in an apartment. The content in the terrarium of domestic land turtles is reduced to the observance of the specifics of their lifestyle in natural conditions:

  1. Ability to moult. Old skin is gradually exfoliated in small areas.
  2. Exposure to anabiosis. With a lack of food and a decrease in temperature, the animals hibernate.
  3. Fear of drafts. Maintenance in the apartment should exclude through ventilation of the room. From severe hypothermia reptile can die.

The food of the tortoise should be varied, containing a lot of plant food

Vegetative foods, which make up the main part of the diet, feed on land turtles in the wild. Reptile protein gets by eating slugs, snails or worms. Room maintenance is reduced to the device terrarium.

At home, feed the land turtle should be products close to the natural menu.

The feeding and maintenance of the land tortoise should differ in the warm and cold season. In the summer it is better to focus on green vegetable food:

In winter, the most accessible are: carrots, cabbage and beets. Some fruits are added to the diet to saturate the body of the animal with vitamins.

Periodically, ground egg shells or bone meal are added to food to enrich the body with calcium. To exclude dehydration of the body, reptiles are given to eat juicy greens.

The turtles are fed once a day.

Caring for a turtle is very simple, and even a child of school age can handle it. It is not recommended to keep it in the limited space of the terrarium all the time.

To meet the motor needs it is released on the floor. The turtle moves slowly, so you need to watch her while walking.

At home, care requires periodic bathing of the animal. At the time of molting, the reptile is bathed in a weak soda solution (1 teaspoon of the substance is put into 1 liter of water). Keeping a turtle in a terrarium makes it impossible to grind down claws.

When they grow back strongly, they are removed with a special kogterezkoy. In winter, animals are irradiated with quartz lamps., protecting eyes.

This is done to fill the body with ultraviolet light.

Permanent housing on the floor in a residential environment is unacceptable. If necessary, protect a small area for walking near the terrarium.

Dimensions capacity for the animal is determined based on the size of an adult individual, which reaches 20 cm in length.

At home, the turtle needs a terrarium, the size of which is selected on the basis of the size of an adult reptile.

The turtle is allowed to be kept in a regular litter aquarium. Gravel, sand or sawdust are poured at the bottom. Change litter when contaminated.

It is allowed to install a small shallow tank with water for bathing a pet. The temperature inside the enclosure should be in the range of 25−35 degrees.

With a lack of natural light, it is necessary to use a fluorescent lamp. The animal is sprayed with warm water once a day.

Humidity in the terrarium must meet the minimum indicators. For a night stay, it is permissible to build a house of scrap materials (plastic or wood).

As a decoration, it is permissible to place indoor plants in a terrarium.: sansevieru, aloe or curly flowers. It is better to install them in small pots overlaid with stones.

The turtle can eat a flower, so it is prohibited to place poisonous vegetation.

With proper maintenance at home, the land turtle practically does not get sick. Novice breeders are capable of making mistakes that will require reptile treatment.:

  1. Helminthiasis Infection with parasites occurs when animals eat unprocessed foods. For the purpose of prophylaxis, medication is given every six months.
  2. Non-compliance with the temperature regime. With frequent stays in a draft of a tortoise, pneumonia can develop. To prevent undesirable consequences after bathing, wipe the animal thoroughly with a dry towel.

Hypothermia turtle can lead to pneumonia. Therefore, you need to monitor the temperature of the content of reptiles.

  • Avitaminosis. Rickets often develops with insufficient content of vitamin D and calcium in the body. For prophylactic purposes, the animal is fed glycerophosphate or include in the diet the required number of products with this element.
  • Conjunctivitis. Developed in the case of hypothermia reptiles. In the medical purposes use drops according to the recommendation of the veterinarian.
  • To exclude negative consequences, it is recommended to follow the rules of animal care and maintenance. Any remaining perishable food should be thrown away after the meal.

Reproduction during the maintenance of the house turtles can create special conditions. After wintering, pairing is allowed. For this purpose, several females are brought up for one male.

Contain representatives of different sexes separately. For the offspring of the male, they are hooked up to the female, so that they are used to each other.

Turtle breeding should start after wintering.

Offspring emerges from laid eggs. Depending on the species, the period of breeding turtles can be from two months to six months.

In one clutch there are up to six eggs. Newborn turtles have an average length of about 3 cm.

To determine the sex of the offspring obtained by the characteristic features. Males have an elongated shell shape and a peculiar hollow in the upper part of the tail in the form of the letter V.

The lower part of the shell near the tail in males is concave. In the female it is straight.

Such a plastron structure is necessary for mating and carrying offspring.

Watching a turtle can bring a lot of joy. When choosing a future pet should pay attention to the appearance of the animal and its activity.

A healthy reptile should not be damaged on its shell and be active in the morning and evening.
