In nature, the rainbow crab grows to 10 cm. At the same time, females always look a little larger than males (manifestation of sexual dimorphism). Individuals raised in captivity will be somewhat smaller.

Indigo has interesting behavioral features. For example, animals begin to compete with each other during feeding, taking food from the enemy or protecting a tasty morsel and threateningly exposing claws.

In order to keep the crustaceans under stress, you need to provide them with a spacious dwelling, where everyone will have their own territory. In fights, males can easily hurt each other and even kill.

Since the crab cannot be completely attributed to either land or aquatic animals, it needs an aquaterrarium to live in an apartment. The capacity is calculated on the basis that one individual accounted for an area of 50×40 cm.

Soil particles should have a fraction of 3-5 mm. A mixture of coral chips and zeolite or granite gravel and tuff is best suited.

Coarse sand can be used.

A crustacean representative spends most of his life on land, but he also needs a body of water for swimming. The recommended volume of the coastal part is 1/3 of the whole aquarium area or a bit more.

Crabs are very fond of when there are live plants in their “house”. It is better to use floating views.:

Mark the coastline can be laid out along the stones. There are also certain requirements for water parameters:

  • temperature – 25−26 ° C;
  • rigidity – over 10 gh;
  • acidity – 7-7.5 pH.

The air temperature in an aquarium with a rainbow crab should be within 26−28 ° C, for this purpose, a ceramic heater is installed inside with an automatic mode adjustment. To preserve the microclimate on top of the container cover with a lid.

Crustaceans love to dig themselves burrows, which are used as a shelter. Some owners specially drop a hollow clay tube into the ground at an angle, in which the crab should fit completely.

The water in the aquaterrarium can be slightly salted in, but the crabs feel great in fresh water. Freshwater lifestyle causes more frequent molting in crustaceans. You should not be afraid of this, this situation is quite normal.

Adults shed 1−2 times a year, for babies and adolescents, this happens more often. The temperature and light mode, the nature of the food influence the frequency of molting.

The rainbow crab gets rid of the old skin, being in water. At this moment it is better not to disturb him.

Pet will fully recover in a few days. After that, you will need to completely replace the water.

Overheating can provoke an extraordinary molt in indigo, therefore, no violation of the temperature regime should be allowed.

With sharp fluctuations in temperature in one direction or the other, the pet may die. And it can happen even after a few days.

Crabs belong to scavengers and in nature feed on what they find in free access. Hunting instinct crustaceans completely devoid.

In captivity, they need to provide a varied diet consisting of both protein and plant foods. Every day, it is recommended to offer indigo at your discretion slices of beef or chicken liver, mussels, shrimps, frozen bloodworm.

The share of plant products should prevail over protein. Crabs willingly eat pumpkin, cabbage, spinach, carrots, lettuce leaves and other greens.

Hard vegetables should be pre-scalded with boiling water to soften them. Fruits can be given apples, pears, bananas.

Food should be finely chopped or grated. A full and varied diet of the rainbow crab at home will contribute to its good health and quick recovery during the molting period.
