Spanish Spiny Newt: Amphibian Uniqueness and Detention Conditions

The Spanish newt or Spanish needle-like newt is a tailed amphibian of the genus of small newts.

This animal was so named because of its natural habitat, and also according to external data. On the body of the triton on the sides are protrusions covering the ends of the ribs.

Such a device is a hidden weapon. If a predator grabs a Triton, then the tips of the ribs will pierce the skin and squeal into the enemy, and there is poison on them that kills the attacker.

Because of the glandular outgrowths on the back, the body of the needle-like newt looks square when viewed in a transverse arrangement. The tail of the amphibian is flattened from the sides, as a rule, it is larger than the whole body or approximately the same length as the body.

The extremities of the males are larger and longer than the females. Also, during spawning on the tail of males, a scallop is formed, the cesspool becomes spherical and stands out strongly.

Ribs of a needle-like newt resemble tubercles. The skin is smooth and shiny when the amphibian lives in water, but with long-term living on land, the skin dries out. The color of newts is very diverse – yellow, brown, white, olive, gray-black.

Females are much darker. In addition, specks often form on the body of tritons, and the silvery strip is different in males during breeding. Amphibians have abdomen yellow, pinkish or light orange.

Over time, the skin on the sides is lightened. The eyes are small, but bulging and have a golden hue.

Adult animals in an aquarium grow to 20 cm in length and can live for about 12 years, occasionally molting.

It is recommended to feed a needle-like newt only with live food, for example, worms, maggots, bloodworms, etc. It is also permissible to include in the diet pieces of chicken and beef, squid and shrimp in a small amount.

Their best to bring a small forceps to the muzzle of the animal.

To feed an amphibian is required as much as it is able to eat, but only three times a week maximum. Young amphibians up to the age of 2 years should be given food daily, but until the moment they stop eating themselves.

Excess food is removed so as not to spoil the water.

Triton is a predator, so it definitely needs live food. Perfect for this:

  • different worms;
  • bloodworm only in small quantities;
  • flies;
  • small snails;
  • grasshoppers.

It is forbidden to feed amphibians with fatty foods, for example, pieces of meat, lard, etc.

Male and female

The Spanish newt becomes sexually mature by the year of life. Females are much more massive than males, their head is almost square in shape.

An adult animal grows up to 20 cm in length.
Females and males regularly molt. The skin begins to burst in the direction from the head to the tail.

The old skin of the amphibian is immediately eaten.

Tritons breed well, for this they do not need to create special conditions. Some time after the start of the mating games, the female lays eggs on the leaves of the plants. She then bends these leaves with her hind legs to hide the future offspring well.

Incubation lasts approximately 2 weeks.

Spiny newt is considered a real long-liver. One adult triton needs about 20 liters of water, therefore several individuals can be kept in a large capacity at a time. The most optimal water level is 25 cm, so that the animal can swim to the surface and breathe air.

The razvodchiki advise nevertheless to close the container with tritons with a lid, so that they do not have the opportunity to escape, and also carefully look at the created conditions to be comfortable. An ideal place to stay is an aquaterrarium with plants and stones.

The soil should be large so that the animal could not eat it, and the plants are selected depending on the brightness and the spectrum of light. Water temperature should not exceed 20 degrees. In order to cool, you can install special devices that can be purchased at pet stores.

Necessary conditions for vital activity of tritons are: filtration, aeration and replacement of one fifth of water at least once a week.

For an animal it is not as important as for fish, maintaining the level of oxygen in the water, since they still float upward for breathing and do not use oxygen from water. But at the same time, the water should be fresh, well-settled and not boiled.

You can not save on the acquisition of the filter for the aquarium, so that the water does not start to become very dirty. The triton receives a certain amount of air from the skin through water, since there are a large number of small capillaries on it.

In this regard, when the skin becomes contaminated and coarse, there is a molt.

When buying a pair of tritons, they need an aquarium of at least 40 l. These amphibians get along well even in small groups of 5 to 6, and some breeders manage to keep them together with the fish. But it is undesirable to settle tritons in the same aquarium with fish, as amphibians can become a victim of an attack.

And even despite the ability to regenerate limbs, it is better to settle these animals.

Spanish newts become sexually mature one year after their birth. The mating games of the male and female last from September to May, and in the process of fertilization the newts move, clutching each other with their paws. At this time, they make sounds that are somewhat reminiscent of the croaking of frogs, and after a few days the female spawns – up to 1000 pieces.

After this, it is better to transplant adult newts to another aquarium so that they do not eat caviar.
