Greetings to you, dear colleague and reader of my humble blog. In touch, as always, Andrei Selitsky, and today I want to talk about snails, but not just snails, but snails that are found in your aquarium.
100,500% I give that this construction is in any aquarium, only the number and types in each aquarium are different. Someone has semi-useful ampouleries, someone has an overcrowded aquarium with coils or melania. That’s not the point, the snails in the aquarium were, are, and always will be.
The question is, do you need them? Here we will talk about it now.
If you control their number, then you do not need to do anything with them, and here’s why. In addition to decorative purposes. Snails are turned on to improve the cleanliness of the aquarium as a whole. In fact, snails are natural orderlies who purify aquatic plants from fouling with various algae, process dead pieces of leaves of aquatic plants, and the remains of the meal of aquarium fish.
I do not agree with such a statement that snails eat fish excrement 🙂 I saw such a pearl somewhere, to be honest, I laughed heartily.
Snails in an aquarium are quite a common occurrence, as there are many species of them that take home water bodies with great pleasure. The most common ways snails enter aquariums are with purchased plants or raw soil.
As a rule, snail caviar is attached to the leaves of aquatic plants, and when a plant is planted in an aquarium, after a certain time, the eggs hatch from the eggs. The only type of snails that accidentally bring in the aquarium will not work – this ampulyarii.
Basically, this type of snails are wound up specifically to maintain cleanliness and order in aquariums.

The presence of snails in aquariums helps to maintain biological balance, the snails pick up the remnants of food that is not fully eaten by fish, and actively fights with various algae. However, do not expect significant benefits from snails. Try to control the number of snails in your aquarium, as when disposing of dead areas of plants and algae, snails also poop, and this in turn increases the amount of organic matter dissolved in aquarium water.
They do not recommend to start a lot of ampoules, as if there is a shortage of feed, they will start to sharpen your plants, mainly small-leaved plants will fall under the distribution, namely: ambulia, limnophila, cabomba. When I last bought 5 ampoules for my aquarium, after a couple of months I got rid of them.
He began to notice that on the surface of the water many leaves of ambulia were floating. At first I didn’t understand where it came from, but then I decided to watch the aquarium and saw that these reptiles had stuck to the plant and gnawed it hard.
In our aquariums ampularia, coils, fizy and melania are the most common. Of the above listed snails, it is easiest to contain fizy and coils. If conditions are favorable, they will multiply rapidly in an aquarium.
If you look closely, you can see eggs laying in the secluded corners of your aquarium – on glasses, stones, plants and appliances. More complex in the content of melania.
These snails from reservoirs of India and Egypt got into our aquariums.
Most of the time, melania spend digging in the aquarium soil, so if you plan to contain such snails, coarse sand with a fraction size of 2-3 millimeters is considered the ideal soil. If the soil particles are larger, it is unlikely that melania will be able to dig it up.
Strongly shallow soil is also not suitable. It is not suitable for both aquarium plants and melania, because in such a ground fresh water will be restricted and it will begin to rot.
In general, their caviar is deposited on the lower parts of the stones.
I want to note the usefulness of melania for aquarium plants. Since these snails are constantly digging in the aquarium soil, they loosen it and thus does not acidify the substrate.
During their underground activities, melania do not touch the roots of aquarium plants, so you should not worry about their safety. The only disadvantage of these snails is that their numbers will grow very quickly and you can hardly control it.
If you have already practiced on the melodies and coils, try to get yourself a few pairs of ampulyarii. The homeland of this snail is South America. Externally, the ampoule is very similar to a well-known lawn, only it is significantly larger.
Under favorable conditions of maintenance and a sufficient amount of food, ampouleries can reach 5 centimeters. At first, the young ampoule has a darkish tint, but over time their shell becomes yellow. Best of all these snails look at sizes of 2-3 centimeters.
Just further on, some degradation begins to manifest itself in the snails – the shell becomes chipped, loses its color and becomes covered with spots. It is not recommended to keep such ampoules in common aquariums, since with their nondescript look they spoil the aesthetics of the aquarium, and even weak plants can break when they climb them.
