Snail ampouleries in an aquarium: breeding, maintenance and care

One of the most popular inhabitants of the aquarium are snails ampulyaria. It is not difficult to contain such mollusks, therefore they are often got by beginning aquarists.

In the natural environment, they can grow up to 11 cm, but in aquariums their size usually does not exceed 6 cm. These individuals attract attention not only with their large size, but also with interesting colors.

Despite the simplicity of the content, there are some points in the care of them that you should be aware of.

Ampularia attracts the eye with a bright yellow color

Homeland ampoule is South America. These snails are usually found in yellow color, but you can find blue, purple and even brown variants on sale.

In this case, their colors range from dark to very light. If the snail has enough food, then it grows to maximum size pretty quickly.

Therefore, it is best to buy small individuals, since they live in captivity for no more than two years.

Under the conditions of an aquarium ampouleries do not live long: no more than 2 years

The clam shell has a special lid., which in case of danger or adverse conditions quickly closes. Ampulyarias get along well with each other, so several species can be contained in one aquarium at once. They have a rather interesting structure of the respiratory system.

On the right side of the individual are the gills, and on the left – the lungs.

The snail needs oxygen to breathe. Therefore, when she needs to pump it, then it rises to the surface and pulls out the breathing tube.

Regardless of the type and color, the structure of all ampoules is the same. They have a well-developed sense of smell, so they quickly find food in the aquarium.

The mollusk has eyes and four tentacles near the head.

Ampularia snails are pretty peaceful creatures. They never bother fish or invertebrates, which, on the contrary, can be dangerous for them.

For example, shrimp or crayfish often pick shellfish from the shells and eat them, while large fish (cichlids, etc.) gnaw them on any good occasion.

Ampularia do not pose a danger to any inhabitants of the aquarium.

You should not keep too many mollusks in small aquariums., since they will not have enough food and a place. On one snail need about 10 liters of volume.

Ampulyaria feel comfortable when the water temperature is 24 degrees and higher. In the aquarium it is also advisable to install a filter that will purify the water, because these individuals eat a lot and, therefore, a large amount of food products remain from them.

And it is also very important that there is enough calcium in the water. If it is not enough, then these peaceful creatures will begin to collapse shell.

If the water is soft, then you can add a special preparation in it, which is sold in a pet shop, or put limestone in the aquarium, as well as sea shells.

Snails bring great benefits to the aquarium, as they are scavengers and quickly eat all the dead fish. These clams do not need special conditions of maintenance, the main thing is that they have enough food.

They also actively eat algae and plaque, which is formed on the walls of the aquarium, stones and plants.

These snails eat the following types of feed:

  • special tablets for catfish;
  • vegetables (cucumber, zucchini, lettuce, peas, cabbage, pumpkin);
  • live feed (tubule, bloodworm).

Ampoulear snails perfectly clean the walls of the aquarium, and they can also be called “orderlies” of the aquatic space.

These individuals eat well all the fish food, so they do not allow the water to spoil and turn sour. If the snails began to eat the leaves of plants, then in this case, feed should be added to their diet, which contain spirulina or vegetables.

But it is important to ensure that the pieces of vegetables are not in the water for more than a day.

First of all, young shoots suffer from ampoules, therefore snails should be kept only with large algae. Also, in search of food, individuals begin to actively dig up the soil, thereby damaging the root system of plants.

In order for the aquarium to be in a neat form, it is important to feed these mollusks on time and with various foods.

You can also give snails pieces of white bread, boiled yolk and bananas. They are happy to eat earthworms and daphnids.

Generally speaking, the snails eat everything they can find in an aquarium.

Ampulyaria are dioecious creatures, therefore, in order to produce offspring, you need to have at least one pair in an aquarium. For some external signs determine their sex is impossible, but they are not hermaphroditic.

Therefore, for reliability it is best to have from four to six such mollusks.

Understand where the female or male, you can during mating, since the latter will always be on top. Reproduction of aquarium snails ampoule occurs in the warm season or when the water temperature is above 25 degrees.

For the breeding of snails required male and female ampulyaria

After mating, the female searches for a suitable place above the surface of the water and lays her eggs there. This usually happens at night or in the evening.

You can not touch the caviar, but you need to ensure that it does not fall into the water.

The eggs themselves are large, reaching about 2 mm in diameter. At the very beginning they have a pale pink color, but after a few days they become white.

Due to the air, the eggs are calcined, and the larvae are safe. All the eggs fit snugly together, and the clutch itself resembles a small bunch of grapes.

A few days before the appearance of clams, the clutch becomes almost black.

Eggs ampouleria change their color in the process of maturation

After about three weeks, the snails begin to hatch. They are still small, but in appearance they no longer differ from adult individuals. To keep the clutch dead, you need to carefully monitor the humidity in the aquarium.

And when the snails start to appear, the aquarium should be covered with glass. In this case, they crawl down to the water, not out, and will not die.

There are also situations where the snails ampoule in the aquarium do not breed, even though there is a male and a female. In this case, for them The following conditions should be created:

  • change the water in the aquarium at least once a week;
  • increase the frequency of feedings;
  • raise the temperature of the water in the aquarium.

To stimulate ampulyaria to multiply, you can try to increase the temperature of the water

If all these three conditions are met, then in a short time it will be possible to observe the reproduction of ampoules in the aquarium. If the snail finds a good place for spawning, it will constantly lay eggs there.
It is important to know not only how to breed mollusks, but also how to feed the hatched young. After all, young snails need constant good nutrition and they, of course, will not have enough of the food that falls to the bottom while feeding other fish.

Therefore, for them you can put in the aquarium pre-scalded lettuce leaves.
