The name of this small, 7–9 centimeter long, “home dragon” speaks for itself – the color of the abdomen ranges from bright orange to red with black spots. The back is both gray and coal-black.

And the color does not depend on the floor. You can distinguish the male from the female by looking at the size of the tail. In the latter it is equal to the length of the body, in the former it is noticeably shorter.

In addition, sexually mature “girls” are a couple of centimeters larger than “boys.”

In their natural habitat, an adult Chinese red-bellied newt can do without water for a long time. At the same time, the frequency of the land and aquatic lifestyle sometimes reaches several months. At home ideal conditions, the amphibian prefers to swim and stroll along the bottom during the day, getting to the land for rest and sleep.

But it happens that the pet constantly lies on the island, and at night it strives to escape from the aquaterrarium. Such behavior of the ward indicates that he is “uncomfortable” at home.

A couple of fire-tailed newts is enough horizontal aquarium with a capacity of 20-30 liters. In addition, for their well-being, you will need to equip housing:

  1. Taking care of the land – a large stone, snag or cork raft will do.
  2. Pour the soil – it is best to coarse pebbles or sand. For additional comfort, it is recommended to add small shards, grottoes and similar shelters made of natural materials to the interior.
  3. Be sure to plant live plants. The best choice would be anubias, cryptocrines, elodies, and other low-growing crops. Useful and floating on the surface, do not require rooting species with dense leaves.
  4. Pour into the aquaterrarium at least a day’s water, so that its level does not exceed 20 centimeters from the bottom.

The last item will be discussed in more detail. The fire-bellied newt in the care is very sensitive to even low chlorine content. Therefore, replacing once in 10 days a quarter of water, do not forget to preliminarily defend it in an open container.

Now as for the other parameters – the ideal temperature for an active lifestyle is 20-23ºС, it can be a little lower, but in no case higher than 26ºС.

Equipping housing for the Chinese red-bellied newt, take care of the necessary equipment:

  1. You can select a regular filter by adjusting the flow to the minimum. Adult amphibians breathe light and do not depend on the amount of oxygen dissolved in water.
  2. Thermostat to control the temperature in the aquaterrarium. In the hot season in the absence of air conditioning in the room will need additional external cooling.
  3. Lighting for 6-9 hours is better to provide LED-lamp with low heat dissipation. The presence of a UV lamp is desirable, but not absolutely necessary. If it is, turn it on for 2-3 hours a day.
  4. You need a tight-fitting lid with glass between the water and the lamp. Remember that a highly purposeful newt can even crawl into the hole between the tubes of the equipment and the wall of the aquarium. Air access will provide windows for feeding.

Eats fire-bellied Chinese newt prefers live food. Getting them for your pet yourself, do not forget to disinfect the “lunch”.

By the way, feeding adults is enough every 2-3 days. So, the perfect diet:

  • In the water, bloodworm, shaker, lean, finely chopped meat and seafood;
  • On land, crickets, earthworms, insect larvae;
  • Weekly calcium supplements.

Under such conditions, the amphibian can stay awake all year round and feel quite normal without hibernation. If we want to get offspring from our wards, we will have to adjust the content of fire-bellied newts to as close as possible to the natural circumstances of life.
