Simple rules for the care of a water turtle suggest, above all, proper nutrition. It must be remembered that you should feed your beloved pet only in water. Meal is first taken twice a day. and gradually decreases to once.

After the bug reaches the age of two, it will be enough to feed it twice a week.

The diet of small turtles may contain:

  • vegetables – zucchini, carrots, cucumbers;
  • fruits – bananas, pears, apples;
  • seafood – low-fat fish, shrimps, mussels;
  • raw or boiled meat – chicken, beef, liver;
  • greens – mint, clover, dandelion leaves, alfalfa;
  • earthworms, beetles, snails, crickets, locusts;
  • mineral supplements, eggshells, shell rock, bone meal;
  • sunflower seeds and sprouted wheat.

Before starting to eat, the bug should be kept warm, which will improve the digestion process. You should also include in the diet sprigs of pears or apples, because to prevent the deformation of the jaw the animal must gnaw.

Do not leave food residue in the water. Often the owners prefer to feed the waterfowl turtles with dry food.

This is not recommended, as animals need natural food.

For a comfortable and healthy pet life, the owner must be able to care for the aquatic turtle. It is desirable to bring the conditions of its life as close as possible to its natural habitat.

Water or semi-aquatic ornamental reptiles should be kept in the water. Turtle better not walk around the apartment, because there is a high risk of injury and catarrhal diseases.

In the process of caring for a water turtle at home should follow the following recommendations:

  1. The size of the glass aquarium should be at least five times the size of the turtle itself, which needs space. Perfectly fit a capacity of 150−200 liters.
  2. The tank should be ten centimeters full of water for a small bug. As the animal grows, the water level should increase.
  3. You must immediately install a lamp with ultraviolet light. The distance between the lamp and the aquarium should be one and a half meters. For a small turtle, you can turn it on twice a week for five minutes, then the time should be gradually increased to half an hour.
  4. At the bottom of the aquarium under ultraviolet lighting should be installed large rough stones that will be used by the pet for the islets, and fairly large branches.
  5. The water temperature should be approximately equal to 25 degrees. On land, the temperature regime should not fall below 28 degrees.
  6. Water changes should be carried out once a week. It is better to use the filtered liquid.
  7. It is recommended to leave live plants on the surface of the water, which will serve as food for the turtles.
  8. A bowl of food is recommended to keep outside the tank.
  9. The animal sometimes needs to be taken out of the aquarium, and in the summer you can take it out for a while on the street.

In case of compliance with these recommendations, the little turtle will be grateful to its owner and will give unforgettable emotions. The absence of disease, mobility and good mood will surely be transferred from the exotic inhabitant to its owner.
