Marble crayfish, keeping and breeding in an aquarium

By breeding a marble crab in an ordinary aquarium, you will not surprise anyone. This beautiful representative of arthropods is absolutely not fastidious about food, but it’s a very interesting and fascinating experience to watch. But for normal life, he needs a certain care and the right conditions of detention.

Only in this case, the water pet will actively grow and multiply.

Marble crayfish will decorate any aquarium

External data aquarium marble cancer is not much different from the usual representatives of arthropods, although it is larger than their river relatives. The only difference is its unusual color, which looks like marble.

It has a chitinous shell of a greenish-brown shade with a small speck of black specks.

In addition, there are several characteristic features that have a representative of this species, namely:

  • Grown in an aquarium, a marble crab can reach 15 cm in length. Juveniles grow very quickly, growth slows down over time, and then stops altogether.

  • The color of the crayfish may be different, in some individuals the shell is green, in others it is brown or even black. It is noteworthy that the older he becomes, the brighter his coloring.
  • All individuals, without exception, have a characteristic marble pattern on the back, by the way, with age it acquires clearer features.

The activity of the inhabitants of the aquarium begins at night, but during the day, on the contrary, it is in a state of rest. The life span of a marble cancer when maintained in an aquarium is approximately 15–18 months.

Under the conditions of an aquarium, a marble crab usually lives no more than 1.5 years.

Besides, individuals periodically moult, this event occurs quite often. During this period, arthropods become lethargic and timid, which leads to a stupor of their breeders.

Many of them get scared when they see a discarded shell in the tank, although this process is completely natural for crayfish.

By the way, you should not get the skin of rache from the water and throw it away. The fact is that the discarded shell is an excellent food for arthropods, it fills their bodies with chitin, and he, in turn, strengthens their new armor.

Basically breeding arthropods at home does not cause trouble. Marble representatives are not whimsical and omnivorous, just follow a few basic rules:

  • Invertebrates should be kept in a spacious aquarium, the volume of which is about 100 liters. This is due to the fact that the crustaceans are sufficiently active and they need sufficient space so that they can move freely through it.

Marble crayfish need a sufficiently large space – no more than two crawfish per 100 liters

  • In one tank can contain no more than two representatives of arthropods.
  • It is necessary to equip the tank with a good filtration and aeration system, this will provide the aquarium with automated cleaning, as well as saturate the water with the necessary oxygen.
  • Constantly monitor the water temperature, it should not be below 20 degrees and above 25, only in such an aquatic environment will the crustaceans feel comfortable.
  • Every 15 days you need to update the aquarium water.
  • The bottom of the aquarium should be covered with sand, you can also add small pebbles.

In an aquarium with marble crayfish, it is desirable to have live algae.

  • To create a natural habitat, it is necessary to lay small ceramic fragments, short pipe cuts or small snags on the bottom. This will create an imitation of shelters that will be used with marble cancer.
  • Since the basic diet of arthropods consists of algae, it is necessary to breed these floating plants.
  • The aquarium in which invertebrates divorce, you need to constantly keep closed. The fact is that they are easily selected from the tank.

Only the fulfillment of all the above requirements will allow you to successfully breed water pets. Proper temperature, feeding and comfortable living, similar to the natural environment, will create a favorable environment for the reproduction of marble crayfish.

Marble variety of arthropods is quite capable of existing in the same aquarium with other inhabitants, although not with all. Predators, especially large ones, are quite dangerous for crustaceans, they often attack them.

They are also incompatible with the waterfowl that live on the bottom, for example, with catfish, the cancer will definitely benefit from such fish.

Neighbors of marble cancer should not be slow, otherwise cancer can eat them

In addition, it is not necessary to put in the aquarium and fish with voile fins, as a rule, they are very slow, therefore they often become food for crayfish.

Swordsmen, guppies and tetras can be excellent neighbors of arthropods. Such fish are very active, frolic and do any harm simply incapable. Yes, and slow-moving cancer to catch such a smart fish can not.

Crustaceans can live together only with the fish that are not aggressive, fearless and active.

Marble crayfish are particularly unpretentious in food, they are omnivorous. Mostly they are fed with food of plant origin. Great for this:

  • zucchini;
  • small pieces of spinach;
  • salad leaves;
  • Dandelion inflorescences;
  • corn.

Any vegetable dressing for marble crayfish must be treated with boiling water.

But before feeding arthropods, all vegetation must be well treated. To do this, greens and vegetable pieces are put in a colander and doused with boiling water, this allows you to get rid of all sorts of bacteria, as well as make the products soft.

In addition, it is recommended to make special vegetable pills that are useful not only to crustaceans, but also to all other fish.

In addition to plant foods, marble pets need protein. That is why it is necessary to feed them with food at least once every 7 days. which contain it, namely:

We must immediately add that arthropods cannot be overfed. It is necessary to feed as much as they can eat.

Food, especially protein food, should not be allowed to be uneaten. Since it will simply fall to the bottom, where it will subsequently rot, and this, in turn, will provoke the appearance of pathogenic bacteria.

With regard to the question of whether there is a marble crayfish themselves, experts answer in the affirmative. Although these arthropods are mainly bred for decorative purposes, and not as a delicacy dish.

This species of crayfish has a rather interesting way of reproduction. The fact is that in the marble breed there are simply no males, therefore they bring posterity using the method of parthenogenesis, that is, they do it themselves.

Marble crayfish lack males. Females are able to breed independently under good conditions.

If they live in a favorable environment, feed well, are provided with aeration, then very soon the female will start laying eggs. Self-bearing, as a rule, lasts no more than four weeks.

During this period, arthropods behave very interestingly, especially it is worth paying attention when the female begins to ventilate her eggs with claws.

A few days before the appearance of small crustaceans, the individual tries to hide and leaves the shelter only after the offspring hatch. Usually a mature female brings from 20 to 100 crusts.

The offspring looks like small fleas that crawl in the sandy bottom of the aquarium. Feeding begins from the day they are born, the diet is no different from an adult.
