Hello dear readers! Royal Leopard Crab comes from freshwater reservoirs of Indonesia. I would like to mention an interesting and unusual color of this crab.
The body is light beige with dark brown spots, which contributed to the appearance of such a name. The size of the king crab is not outstanding: the length of the body along with the claws is only 12 centimeters, and the carapace is only 3 centimeters wide and 4 long.
King crab does not shine a peace-loving character. He tries to keep himself apart and to have in his arsenal enough personal space that carefully guards against various violators of peace.
Therefore, for the maintenance of this species of crab you will have to acquire a whole family of animals, which should include 2-3 females and one male. However, if you plan to buy a pair of males, then in the aquarium there should be enough space for both animals.
Each individual must account for up to 30 square centimeters of surface. In this way, you prevent the occurrence of intraspecific skirmishes, which often lead to the death of one of the crabs.
Do not forget to decorate aquaterrarium shelters of ceramic pots, grottoes of stones and bark, ceramic tubes. Thanks to these things, animals will be able to organize a shelter for themselves and retire there.
Leopard crab does not need dry land, so an ordinary aquarium will be suitable for its maintenance. But if you want, you can make an aquaterrarium, in which it is necessary to make islands of land made of stones and logs. Get ready for the fact that if your container is not covered with cover glass, your pet will leave its home and go for a walk around the house.
They get out with aquarium equipment (pipes, hoses and various cords). Therefore, always cover the aquas with a lid or cover glass.
Unlike the red mangrove crab, which loves to get out on land and spends not much time in water, the leopard crab stays mostly under water and only sometimes gets out to breathe air. Because of this, the crab’s gills quickly dry up and the pet may die.
A crab has one difficult period of life – it is a molt. The rate of adaptation, the quality of the feed, and even light affect the rate of adaptation after the molt.
Crabs are molded only in the aquatic environment, so it is by no means impossible that the water is polluted with waste products. For this, it is necessary to ensure good aeration and filtration in the aquaterrarium. Aquarium water must meet the following requirements:
- water temperature: 25-28 degrees;
- active reaction: pH 8 (in no case can the crab be kept in soft water, otherwise the shell will not harden);
- hardness: 10 dH.
It is recommended to plant a large number of aquatic plants of various species in the aquaterrarium with crabs, because they complement their diet. For the normal existence of the animal requires a variety of food, both animal and vegetable origin.
It is on the feed of plant origin that the normal development and growth of your fancy pet depends.
By the four years of life, king crabs become sexually mature and ready to breed. However, in conditions of captivity, this species of crabs does not reproduce under any pretext.
