Aquatic snails are the orderlies of an aquarium who eat up the remnants of food, utilize dying plants and destroy algae. Nevertheless, most aquarists treat them with caution, since the uncontrolled reproduction of these aquatic organisms can lead to various problems.
Getting rid of snails in an aquarium is not as easy as it seems at first glance, an integrated approach is necessary, including mechanical cleaning and the use of special chemistry.
Fighting snails in an aquarium is not always justified – they can be harmless. These aquatic organisms can be divided into two main categories:
- decorative hybrids;
- unwanted species.
If decorative snails are usually of large size, have an original appearance and bright colors, and their breeding is very difficult, the aquarist does not need to deal with them. But undesirable snails usually get into our aquariums by chance, when we bring in fertilized eggs with aquatic plants, from which numerous small mollusks soon emerge.
Soon their population becomes so large that there are problems in maintaining balance in the aquarium.
If an aquarist can control the snail population, then such small mollusks only help him to maintain a normal balance, destroying excess organic matter and eating the remnants of food, which rots at the bottom and leads to an increase in nitrates and nitrites. That is, in a well-established biosystem, a small number of snails are allowed, which will only help the aquarist, eliminating the need to constantly perform a siphon of the soil.
The controlled snail population does not harm the aquarium, but rather helps to keep it clean.
Multiplying uncontrollably, coil snails begin to compete with each other for food supply. Soon the first problems with aquatic plants appear, the leaves of which eat hungry mollusks, they begin to spoil the water, which leads to the death of farmed fish and the need to restart the aquarium.
The sooner the aquarist begins to combat undesirable living creatures in an aquarium, the easier it is to solve the existing problem. If for many years not to control the population of snails in the aquarium, then, with a high degree of probability, you will have to restart the system.
With this restart, all plants are disinfected on a mandatory basis, which allows them to destroy the eggs that are available on the leaves, as well as to boil the soil, which will help get rid of all unwanted bottom inhabitants.
Problems with snails may appear the following reasons:
- irregular cleaning of the soil;
- plenty of feed settling to the bottom;
- no quarantine for new plants;
- poor biochemical indicators of water;
- wrong population
Regardless of the reason why there were problems with coils and other snails, it is necessary to take a comprehensive approach to solving such a problem, using simultaneously mechanical cleaning, various traps and special chemistry. Only in this way it will be possible, if not completely get rid of, then at least significantly reduce the population of undesirable mollusks, which subsequently will create and maintain a successful aquarium with a luxurious underwater garden and bright tropical fish.
If the number of snails in the aquarium bother you, check to see if you overfeed the fish.
The simplest and at the same time effective way of dealing with snails in an aquarium is the mechanical destruction of aquatic organisms, when they are simply collected from glass, plants and from the bottom of the aquarium. Such thinning of snails in an aquarium should be carried out on an ongoing basis, which will allow maintaining their population at a stable level. The problem is that completely remove the snails from the aquarium, collecting them exclusively by hand, is impossible.
Small individuals will always remain in the ground, and it will be difficult to notice all the eggs on the foliage and glass of the aquarium.
Efficiency in the fight against snails shows the use of various baits. This is a completely safe way to reduce their population in an aquarium.
At the bottom should put a piece of small cucumber, lettuce or banana skin. In a few hours, such a bait will be abundantly littered with coils, which ran to the feast offered to them. All that remains to be done is to carefully remove such a piece of cucumber or salad leaf from the water, remove all the clams and repeat the procedure.
Using such bait snails on a regular basis can significantly reduce their population.
Some species of fish can eat snails or their eggs, for this you need to keep them a little hungry.
In the pet stores today you can find various designs of traps for mollusks that allow you to solve existing problems. The principle of operation of such devices is extremely simple.
The mollusk crawls inside the trap to smell the bait, and subsequently it is no longer able to leave such a house. Qualitatively made traps will not only be effective, but also completely safe to use, preventing the ingestion of fish and shrimps.
The advantages of using traps:
- simplicity of design;
- affordable cost;
- opportunity to make their own hands;
- complete security.
You can also make these traps yourself, for which from plastic bottle a bowl is cut with a depth of about 5 centimeters. The edges are heated and bent inward, which will prevent the prisoners from crawling out of a homemade trap.
In the bottom they make holes, to which the thread is tied with a load. All that remains to be done is to put the bait inside and place the trap in the aquarium at the bottom or in a secluded place.
Such traps should be cleaned every two to three days and literally within a month you can destroy all unwanted mollusks in the aquarium.
In the event of a serious clogging of the aquarium, use electricity to destroy all living creatures. You only need to catch for the time of all the fish and other animals that live in the aquarium.
In the aquarium, where there were only plants, water and snails, they put down two copper stranded wires. Each of the wires connected to the second end of a 9-volt battery.
It will be enough 3-5 minutes of treatment, as the parasites will die, and all that remains to be done is to remove the aquarium soil in order to remove as many of the dead mollusks as possible.
After such a treatment with electricity, it is necessary to perform a second time every 2–3 days soil siphon and daily change approximately 10−15 percent of the water on the fresh settled. The fact is that it will be impossible to completely remove the dead snails, they will begin to decompose and rot, which will lead to an increase in the performance of nitrate and nitrite.
Therefore, you will need to regularly change the water, and if possible, put a small amount of coal and other adsorbents in the outer filter.
The use of special chemistry, subject to the dosage of making drugs in the water, is quite effective and completely safe way to get rid of unwanted mollusks. Apply such chemistry, which can be purchased at most pet stores, should be exactly with the instructions.
Chemical preparations are recommended to be used only in emergency cases, because after them there are a lot of side effects.
Most of the drugs that destroy snails in the water contain copper, which can also be detrimental to the ornamental shrimp in the aquarium. That is why the use of such funds should be sure to remove the shrimp and ornamental snails.
Also on sale you can find special chemicals based on chlorine, which are intended for complete disinfection of the aquarium. Such chemicals can only be used if a full restart of the aquarium is planned. It will be necessary to catch all the fish and other aquatic organisms, remove the plants from the water, and only after that perform disinfection.
After this treatment, the soil is boiled, dead snails are manually removed and a full restart of the aquarium is performed.
The most humane, safe and effective way to get rid of snail reels in an aquarium is to use their natural enemies. It is known that tetradon fish love to feast on clams. In two or three weeks, these fish will be able to completely clear an aquarium of 200–300 liters of mollusks.
It is only necessary to remember that tetradons can show aggression and will annoy other small fishes. As soon as the tetradon destroys all the snails, it will be necessary for the aquarist to hand over the fish to the pet shop, since it can be difficult to feed him with ordinary dry or live food.
Today’s use is also very popular. killer snails, who prefer to hunt other mollusks. Of these snail killers, Helena is the most popular, which is small in size and has an original striped brownish yellow color.
Helens are extremely effective and can completely solve problems with coils in a large-sized aquarium.
Helena will decorate your aquarium and help get rid of unwanted snails.
Much easier to prevent the appearance of snails, rather than in the subsequent fight with them. That is why the soil should be treated prophylactically, and all new plants should be subjected to total quarantine.
Most often, the snails in the aquarium get together with plants on which mollusks lay eggs. It is worth noting even the smallest laying with several eggs, as in literally two or three months the aquarium will already be teeming with small coils, which eat the leaves and poison the water.
All purchased plants should be processed in a light solution of potassium permanganate and inspect them for snail clutches that are manually destroyed.
