How to care for snails at home

Snails are sedentary gastropods. Their habitat can be both land and water. In the wild, these representatives of the fauna rarely live to “old age”, due to the large number of enemies and rapidly changing environmental conditions.

However, home species can live for several years. To prolong the life of pets, it is important to properly care for snails.

The snail, like any other kind of living creatures, needs proper maintenance and care. Only in this case, it is able to live a long life and bring posterity.

To care for domestic snails, you need to know some features of their behavior and preferences.

Depending on the type of mollusk you can use two methods of keeping: in an aquarium or a terrarium. The first option involves the creation of a water tank in which the slow-moving pet will live comfortably and develop.

Another way allows you to equip a dry container and recreate conditions for a snail as close as possible to its natural habitat.

As a “house” for mollusks You can use these containers:

  • glass aquarium;
  • Plastic container;
  • plexiglass vessel.

All of them should be transparent and not have even the smallest cracks.

For one large snail you need at least 10 liters of volume. In less capacity it will be uncomfortable.

When arranging an aquarium, it is important to take into account the fact that some species can easily climb even the most slippery walls. Because of this, it is necessary to provide a closing lid with small openings.

It will promote the free flow of air and protect the owners from escaping a pet.

In order to keep snails at home, you need to choose the right aquarium filler. This may be the following materials:

  1. Flower compost or peat. One of these substrates is poured at the bottom of the container and is evenly distributed. His layer should be about 10 cm in height. The quality of additional materials may be the cores of walnuts, hazelnut shells, fine sand. The filled substrate will serve as a shelter for the snail. In addition, she can lay eggs there. Any of the selected materials needs constant hydration.
  2. Decorative items. In addition, small black stones, beautiful snags, as well as decorate the bottom with live vegetation (ivy, striped ferns, algae) can be added to the aquarium. Such decoration will not only help the snail to find a secluded place in the tank, but will also become an additional source of food.
  3. Feeding trough and drinking bowl (for land species). Both vessels should be of light material and have low edges.

Any type of shellfish requires the right content. One of its main indicators is maintaining a comfortable temperature and humidity.

Not only the health of these representatives of the fauna, but also longevity will depend on such factors.

Each type of snail in the aquarium requires special conditions of detention, so it is not recommended to settle them together. For more comfort, pets need to maintain temperature and humidity indicators that may be present in their habitat. For most snails, 20 to 30 degrees above zero and 80–90% humidity are sufficient.

These values are approximate and can vary not only for each individual species, but also for different ages of the mollusk.

Most snails are nocturnal. The peak of their activity falls on the wee hours.

In addition, the mollusks become more mobile in cloudy weather and during rain.

By the behavior of a pet, you can easily determine the optimum humidity. If they are trying to climb the walls of the aquarium, then it is necessary to lower the existing indicator, in case of digging into the ground – to increase.

Experts do not recommend beginners to put containers with snails near lighting devices and heating devices. In addition, mollusks do not like bright sunlight and direct sunlight.

Care and maintenance of the cochlea at home is a rather difficult task. It is important to consider many factors that will help make the mollusk’s life more comfortable.

These include proper nutrition.

These representatives of the fauna need a variety of food and its timely delivery. Not only the lifespan but also the regularity of breeding depends on this. You can feed them with the following products:

  1. Daily. The basis of the snail ration is various fresh greens and cereals. In this category, you can include shoots of vegetables, lettuce, dandelion, plantain, wheat, rye, barley.
  2. Vegetables. Most types of gastropods will not give up on tasty and juicy vegetables, such as tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots, pumpkin.
  3. Berries and fruits. Be sure to give your pets the flesh of pear, apple, banana, melon, plum, watermelon, cherry, raspberry, strawberry.
  4. Protein. Snails need protein, which is contained in boiled eggs, fish food, meat products.
  5. Top dressing from minerals. Almost all snails suffer from calcium deficiency. From this they can begin to bite their own shell, which will lead to its destruction and the possible death of the mollusk. To avoid such negative consequences, you must periodically add to their food eggshells, chalk, small shrimp, special mixes.

Despite the large variety of products, they should be given in moderation. Snails very quickly get used to any ingredient and can refuse the rest.

To avoid this situation will help frequent dietary changes.

In addition to useful products there are harmful. They should not be given to snails in any case, as they can cause illness and death. In the list of prohibited appear:

  • any kind of salt;
  • spice;
  • fried food;
  • smoked products;
  • sour fruits;
  • spicy vegetables;
  • flour products;
  • citrus;
  • potatoes.

The diet should change with the onset of winter. At this time, the snails need additional feeding: wheat bran, oatmeal, bread soaked in milk, beets, fresh grass.

In no case can not give pets canned foods.

For newly born snail babies a special diet is needed. It will help you gain weight and get stronger as quickly as possible.

Rules for feeding cubs:

  1. In the first days after birth, snails need fresh greens, chalk and eggshell. These products will help to quickly develop and form a strong shell.
  2. Weekly shellfish can be fed with grated vegetables and chopped cereal mixtures. In addition, you can gradually enter into the diet of plant protein and minerals.
  3. After 2 weeks of life, the baby snail is able to eat fish food, boiled eggs and small crustaceans.
  4. In a month, the mollusk can eat the same food as its parents.
