Turtles belong to the order of reptiles. In captivity, their life expectancy is up to 50 years.
Many breeders want to get offspring from reptiles, but this can be achieved only by creating suitable conditions for turtles. In an unfavorable climate, pets may not show interest to each other throughout their lives.
Therefore, it is important to know how turtles mate.
Before breeding reptiles, you must make sure that there is a male and a female. The female can lay eggs without mating, but they will not be fertilized and no offspring will appear.
The ability to determine the sex of turtles appears when they are one year old. It is advisable to take for comparison individuals of the same age. Pay attention to the following signs.:
- males are usually smaller than females;
- boys claws are longer;
- Males can be identified by the concave lower part of the shell.

The pairing of red-eared turtles occurs after they reach puberty, which comes at home faster than in nature. Males become ready for breeding after 4 years of life, and females after five.
The low birth rate of red-eared turtles at home is most often due to the inability of their owner to create conditions suitable for reproduction.
It is undesirable to keep in the same tank several individuals of the male sex, because between them there are fights.
Red-skinned turtles mate reluctantly at home, and the owner has to make a lot of effort to get offspring. The diet of reptiles before mating should be high-calorie, rich in vitamins.
Be sure to give protein foods (minced meat, worms, a mixture of dried crustaceans) and vegetable dishes (pieces of fruits and vegetables, greens, beet tops and carrots).
A female ready for breeding may be anxious, refuse to feed. A pair of sexually mature turtles needed place in a separate spacious aquarium. The optimum water temperature is + 25 ° С.
It should be borne in mind that, carried away by the process of mating, the male can press the female to the bottom. So that the turtle does not choke, the water level should not exceed 10 centimeters.
Even the wrong feed can play a role in reproduction.
Reptiles lay eggs in the ground. It is necessary to place a container filled with sand inside the aquarium.
The tank should be easily accessible and located on land.
Domestic turtle breeds at home, regardless of the season. But it is noted that reptiles are most active from February to May.
Mating is preceded by mating games, which can last for several days.
The male, seeing an individual of the opposite sex, shakes his head up and down. He touches the female with claws and armor, can strike and bite her by the paws, sometimes making a yelping sound.
During the mating game reptiles can not be disturbed, take on their hands. There should be no fluctuations in water temperature, bright light, vibrations. Sexual intercourse lasts 5−15 minutes, sperm can be stored in the female genital tract up to two years.
One pairing is enough for 4−5 clutches.
After intercourse the male must be transplanted, because he can start to show aggression. Before laying eggs, females begin to look for a suitable place for this, lose their appetite, become restless.
The turtle tears out a hole in the ground, wets it with liquid released from the cloacal bladder and makes laying.
After laying eggs, the diet of the female must be balanced so that she can recuperate.
Leave the laying in the aquarium is impossible. It must be carefully, without turning, transferred to an incubator with a temperature of + 25 … 30 ° C.
You can also put eggs in a jar filled with sand and place them near the central heating pipes.
It should be very careful to transfer the eggs to an incubator or a jar of sand.
If it was not possible to observe the reptiles and there is doubt whether the laying is fertilized, you can consider it. On the first day, the fertilized egg is uniform in appearance with a dark dot in the center. In 2–3 months, the embryo is seen.
If there are no blotches, the cubs will not appear. Changing the position of eggs unnecessarily is not recommended.
The turtles hatch in 2–5 months. Their size is on average 28–32 mm long and 30 mm wide, and their weight reaches 4–6 grams.
Young reptiles, at least a year can not be run in the aquarium, which contains adult individuals that can injure babies. Maternal instinct in females is absent.
When turtles completely get rid of the yolk sac, they need to be given such feed:
- minced fish;
- bloodworms, daphnia, gammarusa;
This food contains a lot of vitamin D3 and calcium. These trace elements prevent the occurrence of respiratory diseases and eye problems.
An island of soil, well illuminated with a special lamp, is required.
Reproduction of turtles in captivity is possible under the condition of responsible approach. It is important to monitor the status of reptiles and their conditions of detention.
Particular attention should be paid to the immature young bugs.
