How crayfish reproduce: the process of mating and laying eggs

Crayfish are considered interesting and unusual creatures. People try to breed them at home for various reasons. Some – to diversify the home fauna with unusual pets, others – to decorate their menu, as their meat is considered a useful delicacy.

Crayfish begin to multiply with the arrival of spring. Breeding them at home does not take a lot of energy and does not require large financial investments, but takes a lot of time.

Fruitfulness depends on the number of individuals of different sexes. Males and females have some differences, according to which it is easy to maintain their optimal ratio.

Males are larger in size than females in the same age category. They also differ in the location of the genital openings: in females they are at the third pair of paws, and in representatives of the opposite sex – near the fifth pair.

On the tail immediately behind the paws of the river armadillo are abdominal legs. In males, the first two pairs are well developed, while in females they are only a soft appendage or not at all.

Males of crayfish are larger in size than females in the same age category.

When mating, the cancer wraps the female in the legs and firmly presses against its inner side. There is a transfusion of sperm into the female and fertilization of eggs.

When mating, the female actively fights off the capture of the male. After fertilization, she loses strength because of her active resistance.

Tattered, she hides in a hole, crawling out in search of food during the daytime.

The male, on the contrary, remains active and is able to fertilize several more females. After several matings, he is exhausted and hungry.

It happens that after the last intercourse he can eat his chosen one.

To avoid such consequences, in the reservoir it is necessary to regulate the number of pets – it should correspond to the ratio of 1: 3.

It is interesting to observe how crayfish are born. Fertilized female after 18–20 days begins to lay eggs, which stick to the stalks on the tail and stay there until larvae appear.

This period is the hardest for the female. She constantly rides the water, saturated with oxygen, quickly unbending and bending the tail to wash the eggs.

When the female is in a hole for a long time, the water there stagnates, which can lead to the death of eggs. And also they can be damaged by small insects, for example, water scorpions, smooth beetles.

Even with the constant washing of caviar from mold, dirt and algae, some of the eggs come off, fall to the bottom and disappear. About sixty larvae, whose length is equal to 1.5 mm, are born out of the entire deposited offspring.

About sixty larvae are born out of the whole peeled offspring.

At first they hold onto the stretch of the female. After two weeks, they begin to swim near her, and with any danger they instantly hide under her tail.

Having gained some strength, the kids leave the female and begin an independent life.

Larvae grow slowly. At three months, their length is 3 cm, and the appearance begins to correspond to adult individuals.

After one year, their length is 4 cm, after two years they grow to 6 cm.

To get out of the egg, the crustacean with its legs and belly breaks the shell and hangs on the thread. After three days, the thread breaks, and the larva with sharp claws grabs the calf shell or alga.

So a small representative of crustaceans can live from 3 to 4 days, and at this time it feeds on yolk, which is in the yolk sac on the back under the scute.

Four days after the birth, the larva has a soft shell. On the sixth day, the first molt in her life begins: the yolk sac disappears, the shell hardens, the larva eats the egg membrane.

A week later, the baby becomes very active and begins to swim near the female. At the age of two weeks can leave her forever and go to an independent life.

The molting period is very dangerous for crayfish. Not only the shell is reset, but also the covering of the gills, eyes, esophagus and teeth with which they eat food.

Only the gastroliths remain solid, which are located in the stomach and accumulate calcium, which is necessary for the formation of solid body parts. Cancer, which fades, becomes defenseless, and therefore almost the entire period tries not to crawl out of its hole, so as not to become easy prey for predators or cannibal relatives.

To breed crayfish at home you will need an aquarium of at least 250 liters

Arthropods are bred not only in natural waters. Aquarium – one of the ways of breeding crayfish.

At home, mainly bred such species:

  1. Blue Cuban. The species is popular for its rapid growth and omnivorous. These crayfish mate at a temperature not higher than + 26 ° C.
  2. Australian crawfish is considered a meat species that is well bred in aquariums.
  3. Marble cancer is hermaphroditic. When it is grown, large spaces and constant water temperature are needed.

Species for breeding can be purchased at supermarkets or catch yourself. The best option would be the acquisition of larvae. Aquarium volume need at least 250 liters.

Imitating the natural environment, stones, driftwood, sand are laid on the bottom.

In the aquarium for mating and getting young shoots run 3 adults. Their density in the tank, so that they can multiply, should not exceed 350 pieces per square meter.
