Hello dear readers. In today’s article, I would like to talk with you about the snail-medic, which has recently become very popular among aquarists of various stripes.
This orderly is called snail helena.
Immediately I would like to say about the usefulness of this mollusk – Helena eats other snails. The cannibalism of this snail plays into the hands of an aquarist who needs to reduce the popularity of other snails as soon as possible. In nature, helens are found in rivers, ponds and lakes, so it will not be difficult for her to adapt to life in an aquarium.
The mollusk prefers to stay in areas where there is either muddy or sandy soil at the bottom.
At its core, the snail helena is a predator, eating other types of snails and various carrion. This indispensable quality helped become a very popular aquarium dweller.

The maximum length of the helen shell is 2 cm, but as a rule, in aquariums the length does not exceed 1.5 cm. In nature, the snail can be found in the reservoirs of Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia
The snail is a hardy hydrobiont, therefore, there should be no difficulties in the maintenance of the aquarist. Like other types of snails, helena is extremely sensitive to soft water, because in such water the shells become soft, and this is their main defense against predators.
The main part of its time, helene is buried in the ground, so the size of the aquarium soil fraction should be no more than 2 mm. The best substrate is fine gravel with a fraction of 1 mm and river sand. Such types of soil will bring the conditions of the contents of the snail to natural, where in the reservoirs at the bottom of the soft soil.
Soft soil is also needed so that the young Helen can immediately dig into it after hatching.
Under natural conditions, the snail helena feeds on carrion, live food, small insects and other invertebrates. If the mollusk lives in an aquarium, then in a short period of time it can eat all the coils, fiz and melania, although they don’t eat the latter so willingly.
But if ampulyarias, neretins, tilomeleaniya and marizas live in your tank, they have nothing to worry about.
How is the process of eating another mollusk? Helena shoves a special pipe in which there is a hole into the sink of her potential victim, and literally sucks the victim through it. You understand that such a number will not work with ampoule, but sucking small fiz – this is how it should be.
Also, do not worry about shrimp and aquarium fish, as the Helena just do not steal after them, because they are very much too bright.
If there are no other snails left in your tank, the helens will begin to pick up food from the bottom, which is not eaten by aquarium fish. It can be both frozen food and special tableted feed for catfish.
Some experienced aquarists and I advise you additionally to feed them with krill, frozen shrimp catfish feed.
Reproduction in aquarium conditions is not difficult, as this process proceeds without the direct participation of the aquarist. Helena is a heterosexual snail, not a hermaphrodite, therefore, to get a large offspring, you need to have in the arsenal a large number of heterosexual individuals. The pairing process is very slow and can drag on for hours.
There are cases when other snails are connected to this action, forming a whole ball of mollusks.
The female will lay one egg on a hard surface, it can be a snag or some kind of stone. The development of the egg is very slow, and when the young still hatch from the egg, it will fall to the bottom and then it will be buried there, and you may not see them for a couple of months.
Youngsters make the first attempts to leave the ground when it reaches 7-8 millimeters in length. Of the total number of small snails, only a small part will survive to adulthood.
Perhaps the cause of cannibalism, although I did not see adults eating the young. Perhaps the young just do not have enough food in the ground because of the great competition with their parents, so they die of starvation.
