When feeding aquatic inhabitants, for example, some species of fish and snails, small crustaceans are used. They are sold at every pet store.
One of these crustaceans is gammarus. Gammarus is a small-sized arthropod.
Their nutritional value is high, so they are actively used for feeding their pets.
Gammarus got its name from the transcription of the Latin name Gammarus. They belong to the genus of higher crustaceans. These crustaceans belong to the detachment of scuds for jumping from the water, not forward, but to the side.
Gammarus is not a specific species, but a whole genus. Includes over 180–200 types of crayfish.
This genus has received wide distribution in the Holarctic region. They are not very sensitive to the salt content in the water – they live in fresh and salty waters of the seas and other bodies of water.
They lead a secretive lifestyle – they live under stones and in the sand near the coastal part.
Other names – mormysh, scud, sea fleas.
Externally similar to a small copy of shrimp, bent in the shape of an arc. Body length – 0.5-1.5 cm.
The body is divided into 14 segments and protected by a chitinous protective shell layer. For vision and touch on the head there is one pair of eyes and two pairs of whiskers.
Whiskers help to feel the bottom in search of food.
They move with the help of 18 limbs. The legs on the chest are designed for breathing, they have gill slits. The following 6 legs are needed to move.
A 6 rear designed for jumping.
Body color depends on the food that the mormysk consumes. Herbivores acquire a green shade, eating protein food and receiving a lot of sun – light brown.
Deep water often do not have a color, translucent.
For a short life mormysh manages to molt dozens of times. In the summer molting occurs every week, and in the winter twice a month.
In a female with 8 molts, growths are formed on the abdomen into which eggs will be laid. After 2 more molts, the female is able to give offspring.
