Choosing a future pet in the pet store, many stop their eyes on a moving and brisk waterfowl with an unusual coloring. It is thanks to the coloring.
Among which stand out the bright stripes next to the eyes of the turtle, it got its name “red-eared”. True in Germany, they are called “red-cheeked.”
Even the stripes themselves are not always red, they can have orange and even yellow color.
Red-skinned turtles violate the prevailing opinion of these animals as sluggish and slow-moving creatures. And they are fast not only in water, but also on land.
When danger arises, they prefer not to hide from the danger in the shell, but attack the offender, pulling his head out and biting him with a lightning movement. The tortoise does not have teeth, but it has strong jaw muscles, and therefore the bite is quite tangible.
In addition, turtles love to play pranks – they try to tear off and tear apart everything they can reach with their clawed paws.
The first in Europe about these reptiles were the Spanish colonialists, who saw unusual animals during the study of Peru. For a long time, scientists doubted the classification of red-eared turtles, and attributed them to either one or another type, and only in 1986 did they finally distinguish them as a separate species.
And John Rowey and colleagues proved that these turtles can adapt to the environment by changing the color of the shell. Of course this process is long and especially noticeable if the turtle got into a new habitat at a very young age.
In domestic aquariums, red-eared turtles can live to 30 (less often to 40) years. Of course. Under certain conditions of their detention.
The main among these conditions is the presence of not only water, but also land, where the tortoise can spend a certain period of time. Since the reptiles breathe easy, without sushi, they just die.
They also need enough space. It is important to note that turtles grow quickly.
In addition, they need clean water, the temperature of which will not be below 20 degrees and a varied balanced diet.
Turtles eat both meat and vegetable food. To provide a pet with enough calcium, you can feed it with bone meal, crushed eggshell or chalk.
The older the turtle, the less should be feeding.
And yet, red-eared turtles are not tame animals and can show aggression even in relation to their owner, therefore it is not recommended to take them in your hands without special need.
