Content and features of Achatina fulica (achatina fulica)

The fauna of our planet is extremely amazing and diverse. Special attention has always attracted animals that differ from their usual relatives.

A prominent representative of such individuals is the Achatina fulica snail, which originally inhabits islands and coastal regions of East Africa.

Achatina Fulika – the largest representative of the gastropod class

Habitat is located in the coastal region of northern Africa, where a warm and humid tropical climate prevails. They live in the area of agricultural areas, marshlands, in forests.

The optimum temperature habitat – 18−25 ° C, at temperatures below 3 oC fall into anabiosis.

The key difference between the giant African snail Achatina fulica (Achatina fulica) from other representatives of its kind is an impressive size. The adult individual reaches 35 centimeters in length and up to 15 centimeters in width.

Such a snail can weigh about 500−600 grams.

The shell has a shape close to conical. Its height is 1.5−2 times the width, consists of eight – ten turns.

An important ability of the snail Fulik is shell mimicry – changing the color of the shell depending on the color of the environment. But mostly the color of the shell is dark brown, with reddish or light yellow stripes.

Carapace performs an important function – protects the snail from external threats, and also helps to maintain optimal water exchange, not allowing the mollusk to die from drying out.

From the internal organs, the snail Fulika has a heart, lungs, kidneys, and an anlage of brain tissue. Breathing is also carried out through the skin. The teeth of the cochlea, radula, is a toothed tape designed for cleaning food.

The mollusk has no organs of hearing, but vision and touch are well developed.

The anatomical features of the tactile apparatus include several highlights:

  • On the head of a snail are tentacles – horns. The front pair has a visual function, the back – a tactile and olfactory function.
  • Visual acuity allows Akhatin to see objects at a centimeter distance, as well as determine the degree of illumination of the environment.
  • With the help of the olfactory organ, the mollusk searches for food, receives information about the threat, finds a partner for mating.
  • The sole of the cochlea is provided with receptors that help determine the texture and shape of the surface.
  • To improve the movement is able to secrete mucous substance.

Achatina hermaphrodites, that is, have signs of the female and male genital systems, while the young individuals contain only sperm, and mature – and sperm, and eggs. But two individuals reproduce, self-fertilization is absent.

The breeding process has a feature – Achatina can mate only one size.

The fertilized eggs of the snail are laid in rotten leaves and puddles to disguise them and, thus, protect them from death. Small snails hatch from eggs, since Achatine has no larval stage, which grows to the size of an adult within six months.

Achatina are mainly nocturnal, during the day is at rest. They live in burrows, where they hide from predators.

There is a peculiarity of eating behavior depending on age: young individuals feed on soft, rotten food (plants, foliage, algae), while mature mollusks can eat mushrooms, lichens, and smaller mollusks.

Keeping a snail at home does not require large expenses or significant troubles. For the arrangement of the house Achatina Fuliki standard is a plastic bottle or an old aquarium. A cardboard box for this purpose will not work: it will soak away from constant humidity, and the snail is able to make a hole in it and crawl away.

It is always necessary to put a lid on the improvised house on top, leaving a small gap for the supply of oxygen.

Another important element of the dwelling Akhatin, caused by the love of the mollusk to water procedures, is the water tank. It should be small, stable, water should be poured into a minimum amount so that only the bottom is filled.

It is also worth bearing in mind that snails are very sensitive to the “day-night” cycle: they are awake at night, and during the day they like to hide from the light. Therefore, it is worth making a sheltered place in the home in the form of a squander, a large stone.

The diet Ahatin in most cases consists of plant foods. They love to feast on apples, cucumbers, bananas, skinned from watermelon, tomatoes, potatoes. This species of mollusks needs a lot of calcium carbonate.

With its lack of individuals may gnaw the shells of their relatives. In addition, you can add products of animal origin: egg whites, poultry.

As a source of calcium, the main element of the livelihood of snails, you can use ground chalk or egg shells. It is unacceptable the presence in the daily ration of pets spicy foods, citrus fruits and pure sugar.

An important part of the arrangement of the home for a snail is a good choice of soil. There are several basic requirements for it:

  • At the bottom of the dwelling it is necessary to fill the soil, the layer thickness is 7−10 cm.
  • When purchasing soil, make sure that it does not contain plant nutrients. Also not suitable for lining the bottom of the soil on the basis of clay, sawdust.
  • As a useful additive in the ground, you can fill the husks of walnuts, peanuts, sunflower seeds.
  • It is necessary to monitor a sufficient level of soil moisture, it is not allowed to dry. The snail itself will help you determine the sufficient level of humidity: if it crawls along the walls of the house, then the humidity is too high, and if it is constantly hiding in the sink, then it is low.
  • Replacement of the soil should be carried out at intervals of once every two to three months.

The Achatina snail has become the favorite of a huge number of aquarists, not only because of its external data, but also because of its peaceful, peace-loving disposition. In addition, the maintenance of the mollusk in the home does not require serious financial injections and a long time for home improvement.
