Common diseases of red-eared turtles and their treatment

Knowing about the diseases of red-eared turtles when they are kept at home will help themselves to provide the necessary assistance or immediately contact a veterinarian. The experience of specialists shows that it is better not to wait for the development of characteristic symptoms, but to pay attention to the first signs of the disease.

It is quite easy to identify problems and take appropriate measures.

To avoid disease, you must follow certain rules for the care of the red-eared turtle.

Despite its unpretentiousness, these cute reptiles can get sick. The causes of the disease of red-eared turtles are various:

  • Non-compliance with conditions of detention. Before you start a turtle, you need to carefully familiarize yourself with its lifestyle and eating habits, take into account all the recommendations on the arrangement of the terrarium.

The main cause of diseases of the red-eared turtle is improper maintenance and unbalanced nutrition.

  • Contact with diseased individuals. If you buy several turtles at once, one of them was ill, then there is a high probability of contact transmission of infection. Infection can occur in the store.
  • Injuries. In the awkward handling of a pet, damage of varying severity may occur. In the future, this may lead to a secondary infection.
  • Change of conditions of detention. Stress arising from transportation or climate change can cause illness.
  • Improper nutrition. Poor food and avitaminosis can also lead to illness.
  • Violations of temperature.

Diseases and treatment of the red-eared turtles do not necessarily expect all owners. These reptiles are quite disease resistant and can live for many years without suffering from anything.

But if suspicious signs do appear, then attention should be paid to them. With careful attention you can notice:

  • long stay on the surface of the water or near the bottom;
  • lethargy and lack of appetite;
  • changes in the appearance of fecal masses;
  • white plaque on the skin;
  • detachment or softening of the shell;
  • discharge from the eyes, especially purulent.

Red-skinned turtles are resistant to diseases and unpretentious, however, you need to pay attention to a number of symptoms

Any of these symptoms is the basis for contacting a veterinarian. It is dangerous to treat animals on their own.

This can lead to death. What the red-eared turtles are sick at home, experts know.

Symptoms and treatment of shepherd turtles when the disease occurs differ from each other. Each diagnosis has its own. Conventionally, there are 5 main groups of diseases:

  1. Diseases of the bones and shell. Lack of vitamins and minerals, especially calcium, provokes these problems.
  2. Diseases of the respiratory system. The most common and dangerous of them is pneumonia.
  3. Intestinal infections and the presence of worms.
  4. Diseases of the hearing. Turtles suffer from otitis.
  5. Fungal and bacterial skin diseases.

Timely treatment of any of these diseases can save the life of a pet.

Problems with flaking and softening of the shell and bone diseases are caused by a lack of minerals and ultraviolet rays. Proper terrarium lighting plays an important role. Symptoms of rickets include:

  • changes in the structure and shape of bones;
  • paw thickening;
  • the turtle does not move much;
  • detachment of cornified particles of the shell with its subsequent softening.

If you find these symptoms, you should consult with your doctor. When prescribing treatment, he will select the appropriate complex of vitamins and minerals, and if necessary, will conduct additional therapy.

For the prevention and treatment of rickets, you need to take care of additional coverage of the terrarium and the addition of essential minerals to the diet.

Independently, you can add fish to the diet, grinding it with bones, and install an ultraviolet lamp. From time to time a sunbath is useful for a turtle.

In time, unnoticed pneumonia in a short period can kill an animal. Hypothermia of a reptile or stagnation of water in a terrarium leads to its occurrence. Symptoms:

  • swollen eyes;
  • open mouth and mucus from the nose;
  • awkward ascent to the surface of the water in a lateral position;
  • loss of appetite and low mobility.

In the treatment of this dangerous disease, injections of antibacterial drugs are used, therefore, a visit to the doctor cannot be avoided. After recovery, restorative therapy is prescribed.

Occur when the body is filled with worms, the penetration of bacteria and viruses. The alarming symptoms include:

  • lethargy;
  • inactivity;
  • lack of appetite;
  • weight loss;
  • sometimes foaming from the mouth;
  • diarrhea.

For any intestinal diseases, you should consult a veterinarian.

Self intestinal diseases are not treated. Required procedures in the clinic.

Among them are quite dangerous. Diseases can be divided by their causes:

  • various suppurations (secondary infection) as a result of injuries and skin lesions;
  • fungal and bacterial infection;
  • violation of metabolic processes, including avitaminosis and hypervitaminosis.

The slightest injury can lead to infection penetrating through the wound surface. Ulcers and boils may occur on the skin.

In some cases, it requires not only treatment, but also surgery.

A raid on the shell or flaking of the plates may indicate a fungal disease in a red-eared turtle.

Fungal lesions become dermatomycosis. Most often they are associated with a fungus that in aquarium fish causes a disease called saprolegniosis. The fungus feels great in water polluted by the remnants of food and other organic matter.

Its branched filaments fall on the skin, penetrate it and cause inflammatory processes (up to necrosis). Signs of fungal infections include:

  • grayish-white scurf on skin and shell;
  • exfoliation of the horny plates;
  • the formation of cavities and bubbles in the thickness of the shell.

Together, these signs speak of a fungus. In the advanced stage, only the doctor can specify the diagnosis and prescribe treatment.

From the owner’s side, monitoring the content of a bug in pure water can be a real help. Having noticed the disease at an early stage – a raid on the skin and armor, you can try the following measures:

  1. Bathe your pet in a disinfectant solution. Per liter of water is taken 1 g of manganese, which is previously dissolved in a small amount of water (about 100 ml). The procedure lasts 15 minutes and is repeated for 2−3 days.
  2. After bathing, lubricate the affected areas with anti-fungal drugs: “Kanesten”, “Parchesteron” or “Panolog”.

With proper treatment, the symptoms of the disease should disappear after a specified time.

Violation of metabolic processes is expressed in peeling and rashes on the skin, dermatitis and detached scales of shell. A lack or excess of vitamins and minerals will be established by a veterinarian.

Treatment is prescribed complex.

The inflammatory process can be both an independent disease and a concomitant symptom of another disease. The main causes of eye damage include:

  • terrarium water pollution;
  • the presence of streptococci or staphylococci in water;
  • complications of diseases such as pneumonia, rickets or metabolic disorders, including beriberi.

Swollen eyes in a red-eared tortoise may indicate development of conjunctivitis

One of the most common independent eye diseases is conjunctivitis. His symptoms are:

  • swollen eyelids;
  • eye redness;
  • purulent discharge;
  • lethargy and poor appetite;
  • The bug constantly rubs its paws on the eye.

When neglected, the eyelids may stick together and remain closed.

In the initial stages, conjunctivitis is treated with drops, which the doctor will select. In case of progressive disease, antibiotic ointments are used.

Not timely or poorly performed (independent) treatment can lead to the destruction of the eyes and complete blindness.

Red-eared turtles have no outer ear, so the inflammatory process immediately begins inside the ear canal. His reasons may be:

  • hypothermia;
  • infections;
  • metabolic disease;
  • wrong content.

The risk of otitis in red-eared turtles increases with age

Recognizing otitis is not too difficult. Pay attention to the following signs:

  • ear swelling;
  • increased attention to the ears of the tortoise – it rubs their paws;
  • when swimming, the animal takes a lateral position.

The older the turtle, the more likely the occurrence of otitis media. During treatment, it is impossible to do without a specialist, especially at the purulent stage.

Often, surgical removal of the plug or an abscess that has arisen is necessary, followed by treatment.

Prevention of any diseases of these cute turtles – attentive attitude, proper maintenance and feeding. And then they will please their owners for many years.
