Cherry shrimp is the most popular shrimp among the crustaceans, which lives and breeds successfully in aquariums. The pledge of the popularity of this species of crustaceans – unpretentiousness, ease of reproduction and a bright appearance.
This greatly simplifies their content.
Cherry shrimp is an artificially bred form from a wild species that lives in nature in the rivers of Taiwan. In nature, crustaceans are almost completely transparent, rarely small dark specks can be seen on them.

But the breeder, by selecting the most colorful individuals, developed a new breed with a bright orange shade of shell and a length of 2.5 cm. The females of the cherry shrimp are usually much larger and brighter than the males.
These shrimps in the aquarium are harmless for each other and for other inhabitants; they can only eat up the corpse of a fish after natural death. They show activity all day long, without hiding, crawling around the plants and decorations in search of food.
Cherry shrimp shed regularly, and their empty shells remain lying on the bottom or swim in water. You do not need to be afraid of this process, because the molt is considered natural, because the cherry grows in size and its shell becomes small.
Shrimp eats discarded skin to replenish the body’s nutritional components. But when you shed shrimp you need to hide, as they become completely defenseless – perfectly suited for this grass or moss.
Cherries are not a pretentious type, they adapt to virtually any conditions in the aquarium. They can feel great in a tank of only 10 liters and in a large aquarium.
The main rule of maintenance is to maintain stable parameters without sudden drops, as well as timely change of water to prevent poisoning by nitrates and ammonia.
In order for the content to be successful, the aquarium must be equipped with a high-quality, strong filter, its water intake must be covered with a sponge so that young crustaceans are not drawn into it. With increasing water temperature should be increased and aeration.
The temperature in the aquarium can be chosen from 20 to 29 degrees without abrupt changes, the rigidity and acidity is better to choose the average. Too soft water will not allow the cherries to form a good new shell after shedding.
Water should be changed as necessary, at a time it is permissible to change no more than 10% of the total.
Soil is best made from sand, pebbles, small gravel. Also on sale in pet stores there are special soils for these crustaceans.
Do not neglect the planting of plants – shrimps can hide in them. Perfect any moss and plants with small leaves, which later grow into dense thickets.
Scenery can be put at will, and cherries like moderate lighting.
To prevent discoloration of shrimp in an aquarium, it is recommended to observe the following rules:
- The selection of individuals. Cherry shrimps are artificially deduced, therefore, when there is no selection, they tend to return to their usual form with dull shades of shell. To preserve the color of young individuals should be caught and sorted by color.
- In the aquarium population, it is recommended to periodically launch new individuals that are not relatives. Several times a month, you can buy several pieces of crustaceans from different vendors.
- A big role in maintaining the bright color of shrimp is the diet. The brighter colors are in those cherries that eat special food with carotenoids in the composition.
It is well reflected in the color of shrimp, if they eat aquarium algae. Healthy shrimp cherries practically do not eat, but the algae that have died after being treated with algaecide are eaten with pleasure.
The color of the cherries will be much brighter when the background of the aquarium is dark.
Under natural conditions, the crustaceans are very vulnerable, the same applies to the aquarium. Their size is small, they have no protection, except for the possibility of camouflage, but after selection in conditions of an aquarium, it turns out to be impossible. Therefore, even small fish can eat shrimp or bite off her foot.
It is ideal to contain cherries in separate tanks without fish, and if this is not possible, then it is better to hook them to peaceful small fish – neons, guppies, mollies. But the angelfish quickly eat crustaceans, also for food they will take cichlids.
The larger the fish, the greater the risk of the shrimp being food for it.
Some aquarists believe that it is not necessary to feed shrimp separately when they are kept together with live plants and fish – they will have enough residue from food for fish, algae fouling and detritus. This is true, but sometimes the crustaceans must be supplemented with special foods to maintain the brightness of the color.
Shrimp food is excellent for this, as well as fish food for bright fish or catfish sinking pills.
In the aquarium, the shrimp well take shredded tubule and live auloforus. In order for the active fish not to eat all the food, you need to lower part of it into the thickets of moss and plants.
