There are several varieties of Achatina. They all feel good around people and live well in captivity.

Terrestrial mollusks vary in size, color and temperament. Among them are the following breeds:

  1. Reticulum. This is the most agile and curious representative of the gastropods. The snail is always interested in what is happening around it, and for better visibility it often raises its head and pulls out the neck. Her body is painted black or dark brown, and on the leg there is a frame in the form of a white border. The shell has a conical shape and maroon-gray color with red stripes. Achatina of this type grows very quickly, the length of its body in a few months can reach 22-23 cm, and the height of the shell – 18-20 cm.
  2. Fulika. A very calm mollusk that most of the time likes to spend in a state of rest. Fulika is quite large – in adult members of the family, the sink can exceed 25 cm in length. The color of her body is milky beige, and the shade of vintage armor varies from black to dark orange.
  3. Immaculate The snail differs from the previous species in its color. Its brown shell has a purple rim, and on the neck and head is a light pink strip.
  4. Albopikta. Outwardly, it resembles the Achatina reticulata, but, unlike it, has a smaller size. This mollusk grows to 15 cm and has an excellent appetite. Its dark beige shell is surrounded by a bright rim and has a reddish tip.
  5. Iradeli. The smallest among all breeds, its shell and body is not more than 6 cm in length. The head, neck and tail of the mollusk are milky, and the pointed shell is colored lemon. Achatina iradeli refers to viviparous species, while other breeds of snails breed by laying eggs.

In the wild, African Achatina usually has gigantic sizes and spotted colors in brown tones. At home, its parameters are much more modest, and there are quieter shades in color.

Some residents of our country prefer to start snails. They are very bright, colorful and not too large.

The height of their shell is 4.5–5 cm, and the length of the body does not exceed 4 cm. Care for land snails and their content do not pose any problems, since the grape mollusks are undemanding, calm and well tolerated by a society of people.

Although clams are not very demanding creatures, they need a suitable house for living, as well as a full and regular diet. In this case, exotic pets will always be cheerful, healthy, open to communication and will often be able to surprise with interesting moments of his life.

At home, gastropods live well in small terrariums. Snails require a warm and humid environment., therefore, a glass aquarium or a plastic container will suit them as a home, where it is easiest to save these parameters. You need to choose a roomy dwelling, its value should correspond to the number of pets.

It is advisable to contain 2 or 3 Achatina, as they feel better in the company of their relatives. The container must be transparent, as the land mollusks need light.

It is necessary to drill ventilation holes in the house and install a reliable cover that will keep moisture well in the internal space and will not allow pets to escape. It is recommended to hang a thermal shoe on the back wall outside, and fix a thermometer on top to know that snails are not cold and cozy.

It should not be forgotten that Akhatinam is most comfortable at a temperature of + 22-25 ° C.

As a litter it is better to use coconut substrate or flower soil without fertilizers. Mollusks like to burrow into it, so the thickness of the ground cover should be about 4-5 cm. Do not pour sawdust or sharp pebbles to the bottom, because pets can get hurt.

The substrate should always be a little wet, so it needs to be sprayed with water every day.

It is advisable to plant moss, lettuce or grass in a terrarium, put wooden branches, build a reservoir from a shallow bowl – snails will like it very much. Plastic plants can also be used as a decor – they will be easier to put in order.

All the material for the arrangement must be purchased at the pet store, as the soil or plantings taken in the park or garden may contain dangerous microbes that will cause diseases to Achatina.

Snails in the terrarium do not need to look very often. Leisurely creatures usually are nocturnal, and during the day they prefer to dig in the sand or sit motionless on the wall of a container.

But the Achatines still need attention: you need to remember to feed your pets and clean their house regularly. The basic rules for the care of home snails are as follows:

  1. It is necessary to collect daily the remains of food and excrement, check the humidity of the substrate and, if necessary, irrigate it with water. General cleaning should be done 1 time in 10 days. To do this, you need to release the terrarium and wash it without using soap or powder, and then fill it with fresh soil.
  2. Molluscs need to be fed every day. This should be done 1 time per day, better in the evening.
  3. Land snails do not need walks, but fresh air is very useful for their health – from it gastropods increase activity and improve digestion. It is recommended to take them outside in a portable container for 20-30 minutes and make sure that the sun does not fall on it. Do not release mollusks on the grass, as they can become infected with parasites or attract the attention of predators.
  4. Achatina love to swim, so 1-2 times a week they can be watered with warm water or placed in a separate bowl with a small amount of liquid.
  5. Gastropods need to have plenty of calcium so that their shells are strong and beautiful. Therefore, in the house should always be its source. You can purchase special formulations at a pet store or give eggshells.
  6. It is advisable to often communicate with your pet. You can take it only with clean and wet hands. It is recommended to bring the palm to the snail’s leg and wait until it crawls onto it. You can not grab Achatina for the sink and try to tear it away from the wall of the terrarium by force – this way you can crush the fragile shell.

Unusual creatures need to be handled very carefully, since various injuries are very dangerous for their health. If there are cracks in the shell, you can try to glue it with medical glue or take the snail to a veterinarian.

It is important to remember that if the shell is badly broken, then the pet will die.

Ground snails need to be fed 1 time per day. In the house should be water for drinking.

Shellfish are very fond of vegetables, herbs and fruits. It is important to provide them with a full-fledged diet, otherwise they will get used to one type of food and refuse other food.

Such nutrition adversely affects the development of pets. To avoid this, It is important to give them a variety of products:

  • fresh vegetables: cabbage, lettuce, cucumbers, boiled potatoes, tomatoes, celery, pumpkin, zucchini;
  • sweet fruits: grapes, pears, melons, bananas, watermelon, plums, apples;
  • oatmeal flakes;
  • peanut;
  • beans;
  • soft bread;
  • mushrooms;
  • field grass, dandelion leaves, fruit trees and clover;
  • milk and dairy products (with a small amount of fat);
  • boiled eggs;
  • feed;
  • bone meal.

With great pleasure Achatina eat food rich in proteins, for example, fish or meat puree, cottage cheese and even fish food. Greens, fruits and vegetables must be washed to remove dirt and chemicals from their surface.

Eaten remnants of food should always be removed from the terrarium.

It is strictly forbidden to feed the gastropods with spicy, salty, sweet, fried and smoked food. It should be remembered that salt is very harmful and dangerous to their health and life.

Raw shellfish, macaroni and citrus fruits should not be offered to shellfish.

Regular care is the key to the health and well-being of African snails. If you keep a few adult individuals, it is good to feed them, treat them gently and ensure silence, then soon pets will get children.

Mollusks become sexually mature from 6 months to one and a half years. Each snail has male and female genitals, but they still need a partner for fertilization.

After one mating, Achatina can produce offspring 4-6 times a year.

The cochlea from eggs the snail buries in the ground, therefore it is necessary to check the substrate once a week for the presence of translucent balls. If there is no desire to grow future babies, the eggs can be removed from the soil.

Having decided to leave the clutch, it is necessary to more closely monitor the humidity of the substrate and maintain a temperature of about +28 ° C.

When small clams hatch, they can be seen on the surface of the earth. They practically do not require care, but it is better to feed them with solid food, and instead of the ground to spread lettuce leaves.

When the snails get stronger and grow up a little, they will be able to look for a good host.
