Aquarium frogs: maintenance, care and reproduction

As aquarium inhabitants give birth not only fish. For example, a frog can also become a pet.

She does not need a large amount of water for maintenance. Aquatic frogs may well live even in a 5-liter capacity.

They are funny hovering in the water or swimming, like little divers. Watching amphibians is very interesting, and maintenance does not require much trouble.

Frogs do not require large aquariums to keep

There are 2 types of frogs that can be found in modern aquariums. Each of them has a distinctive appearance, behavior and environmental requirements.

Most often, fans give birth to xenopus (spur’s frog). On sale there are two varieties of these amphibians. One of them has white, yellow or slightly pink skin and red eyes and is an albino.

This subspecies of spur frogs was artificially bred under laboratory conditions for conducting experiments. Another species is a wild, gray-brown color with spots.

This subspecies of amphibians is larger, there are no membranes on their paws. Spur frogs grow to 10−12 cm

Another species is the hymeno-virus (dwarf frog). She has a more slender long legs and a pointed muzzle. The size of the hymeno-virus is only 4 cm.

Its color is gray, brown or olive with spots. In an aquarium, hymeno-viruses differ in their calm disposition and inactive behavior.

They are harmless and prefer to sit somewhere near the bottom. Spur frogs, on the contrary, move a lot, swim actively, can pester fish in an aquarium, pick up the ground and move pebbles in search of food.

Judging by the description of aquarium frogs, the maintenance and care of them do not present any particular difficulties. Large xenopus suitable aquarium 20−30 l, which is filled with water only up to half. In addition, you need to consider the followingher:

  1. From above there should be a cover or a grid – frogs easily get away from their “house”.
  2. As the soil is ideal pebbles.
  3. Water should have a temperature of 22−25 ° C, hardness and acidity values do not matter. But first you need to defend it to reduce the content of chlorine and fluorine.
  4. Lighting does not play a role for frogs, the light will be needed if plants are planted in an aquarium.
  5. The dwelling of the spur frogs should be equipped with an internal filter, since they strongly pollute the water. Water changes are made 1-2 times a week, some do it less often.
  6. Plants must be planted in pots and have hard leaves, otherwise they will be ruthlessly pulled out. To give a decorative “frog” can be placed next to the pot with an ampel flower and pull it down into the aquarium shoots.

To keep aquarium frogs need at a temperature of 22−25 ° C

Because of the small size of the dwarf aquarium frog, only 1–2 l of water is enough for one individual. Therefore, a 5-liter aquarium will be enough for a couple. If it contains only frogs, then it is necessary for them:

  1. Use cover to prevent escape.
  2. Maintain a water temperature of 24 ° C (you must first defend).
  3. Install a low power filter or compressor so that standing water zones remain.
  4. Arrange at the bottom of the scenery to shelter hymenochiruses.
  5. Plant vegetation (better in pots) – dwarf frogs love it.
  6. Embed lighting in the cover. The frogs love to bask under the lamp, half leaning out of the water.

They feed ornamental frogs with live food., offering them large moths, crickets, meal and earthworms. Amphibians and pieces of meat, fish, liver, shrimp are eagerly eaten. It is convenient to give food by grabbing it with tweezers.

Feeding adults should not occur more than 2 times a week, this mode is ideal for their digestion.

The amount of food should also be limited. If you give amphibians as much food as they can eat – they will quickly develop obesity.

It’s funny to watch how xenopus feeds. This frog has no tongue, so it helps itself to swallow food, pushing it into the mouth with its paws.

Buying domestic frogs, you should pay attention to what kind of seller offers. Often the frogs in the pet store contain everyone together, but you need to consider that the conditions of detention for them are still different.

Considering the size of the white aquarium frog and its wild relatives, we can say that there is no place for xenopus in the aquarium with fish. They will eagerly swallow everyone who fits in their mouths.

In addition, amphibians will damage the plants and mercilessly dig the soil, making the water turbid. And the spur frogs themselves will not like clean water with a strong current.

As you know, they like the standing swamp.

It is better not to fish the fish in an aquarium with frogs

Some aquarists believe that white aquarium frogs are beneficial by removing mucus from the skin, which has bactericidal properties and protects fish from infections, but this is a dubious argument. Now there is no problem to buy any medicine that acts quickly and efficiently.

In extreme cases, the opponents of chemistry can do the bath for the sick fish, using water from an amphibian tank.

But hymeno-viruses can be settled in a common aquatic system. They will get along well with calm small fish and will remain intact in the absence of predators.

But watching amphibians in a large aquarium is unlikely to succeed.

Hymenohiruses prefer to sit in distant corners or thickets of plants and almost never catch the eye. Yes, and feed them in this case is very problematic, given that they should bring the food directly to the nose.

It is not always possible to maintain the health of amphibians. They can hit:

  1. Dropsy. The frog swells and becomes like a ball. The disease has a bacterial nature. So that the skin does not burst, you can make it puncture.
  2. Red paw. Another bacterial infection. Symptoms manifest as hemorrhages on the face and paws of the amphibian.
  3. Fungal diseases. Often they provoke skin injuries. The place attacked by the fungus is covered with white bloom, similar to lumps of cotton. If untreated, the disease spreads throughout the body.
  4. Nematode infection. Caused by small worms, 1−2 mm long. The skin of the amphibian becomes gray, begins to flake off. The animal quickly loses weight.

They treat amphibians with the same preparations that are used for aquarium fish, applying them taking into account the cause of the disease. More often those frogs are sick that get monotonous food, live in inappropriate conditions or are subject to stress.

Before the start of reproduction, amphibians need to create appropriate conditions. Water change during this period is made 2−3 times a week.

The water itself should be slightly warmer than usual. When black stripes appear on the male’s paws and he announces readiness for spawning with a characteristic sound, a couple is deposited into the spawning ground with clear water and a suitable substrate.

After the roe has been set aside, the parents are transported back to the aquarium.

Masonry may consist of 50−200 eggs. The tadpoles emerging from the roe are only about 3 mm in size. Feed such babies with rotifers and ciliates.

Adult frogs become by the end of the first year of existence. Xenopus can live in the aquarium up to 15 years under all the necessary conditions.

Hymeno-viruses by nature released about 5 years of life.
