Spur frog is the most ancient representative of amphibians. South African amphibians are becoming popular with aquarists.
Homeland amphibian – Africa, the area spread to Europe and the Americas. The frog is called Spur because of the claws (spurs) on the hind limbs.
Claws up to 3 mm in size are involved in the process of swimming and hunting. On hind legs there are membranes. Were limbs with long fingers without membranes.
The length of the body of an individual in nature is up to 9 cm; at home, the spur amphibian grows larger. The muzzle is short and round.
The amphibian breathes air and has a good sense of smell. Color from light to dark brown.
On the body there are sometimes fuzzy patterns. Locals eat spur amphibians for food.
Spur amphibians are predators who do not love their neighbors. Nervous, if the animal is scared, starts to rush around the aquarium.
Amphibians live for 10–15 years, with the exception of albinos living up to 10 years.
There are almost 30 species of spur frogs. Aquarists hold up to 5 species, but more often in domestic water bodies are found:
- Albino – a form derived artificially. Dimensions of albino spur to 15 cm, body color pinkish. Feels comfortable in a small aquarium. Albinos live less than their fellows and are prone to obesity.
- Smooth Spur Frog (xenopus laevis). View a long time bred in aquariums. Color more saturated, dark.
Spur frogs are simple in maintenance and care, suitable for beginners. Keep the animals clean and cool.
The volume of the aquarium for one spur-wing frog is 30–40 l. This species lives immersed in water, so the aquarium must be completely filled with water. Isle land is required.
The spur amphibian spends most of its time at the bottom, so give preference to a wide rectangular aquarium with a lid. Place a special thermometer in the water to accurately know the temperature.
Spur amphibians prefer water with a weak current. Susceptible to the content of nitrogenous compounds in water.
The substrate is an alternative to the soil, facilitating the preservation of cleanliness in the aquarium. Place the tank on a dark backing or cloth.
Choose the soil of medium and large fractions, otherwise the animal will swallow a particle of soil. The color is preferably dark, so that the pet contrasts with the bottom, and it was easy to notice. Placing small stones is allowed, then swallowed stones will be able to pass through the animal’s digestive system.
Soil should be non-sharpened, do not contain dangerous impurities. If stones are collected outside, boil them.
Substrate thickness not less than 4 cm.
Spur frogs damage the plants with claws, so planting greens is not necessary. Anubiases can be planted; their hard leaves are stronger than those of other plants.
An amphibian will gladly hide among various shelters:
- coconut shell decorations;
Spur amphibians are unscrupulous, but like clean water. Of the equipment, only a filter is needed.
Water heating is needed if the temperature drops below 18 degrees. The filter should be powerful, but not create a strong current.
If the aquarium is large, give preference to an external filter.
Light day should last no more than 12 hours. If the aquarium contains plants, be guided by their needs.
Change up to 30% of water from the volume of the aquarium at least once a week. If tap water is used for replacement, defend it within 24 hours, then chlorine will completely evaporate.
Wash the soil and decorations without using detergents.
Adult spur frogs feed once every 2–3 days, frogs – daily. Components of the diet:
- dry and frozen food;
- small fish.
You can not give fatty meat, goldfish, shredder.
It is possible to determine the sex of the spurted frog from 7 months. Females differ in larger size and quiet disposition, there is an egg-shaped, resembling a tail.
The male is slimmer, very agile and makes sounds similar to twitter. Sexual maturity of the frog reaches at 3 years of age.
In an aquarium, frogs breed once a year. Push animals to breeding, replacing 30% of the water.
Shade the aquarium and temporarily turn off the filter. Maintain a temperature of 22–25 degrees.
During the day, the female lays about 200 eggs. After a few days, the offspring appears. To increase the survival rate, transfer the parents to another aquarium.
Appeared tadpoles eat on the 7th day of life. Feed them chopped food for adults.
Provide progeny stable parameters of water and volume at the rate of 1 l per 10 individuals. The transformation into frogs is completed in 2 months.
It is safest to keep spur-like amphibians in a species aquarium. You can try to keep amphibians with mobile non-aggressive fish like danios or snails. You can not inhabit the frogs in one tank with many other inhabitants:
- aggressive and predatory fish (cichlids, piranhas);
- large leisurely fish (catfish);
- other amphibians.

Pets will fall ill with improper temperature, excessive water pollution or parasite infestation with live food. Animals subject to:
- Infection with nematodes. The skin becomes grayish and flaky. Amphibian loses appetite and loses weight. On closer examination, small worms are noticeable. Treated with most parasitic drugs, for example, panacure (for pulmonary nematodes) or piperazine (for intestinal nematodes).
- Fungal infections. On injured areas, growths similar to cotton wool are formed. Treat spur frogs with salt baths and solutions.
- Sepsis. The disease is also called the “red leg”. The animal loses its appetite, the belly becomes reddish, the skin turns pale. In the advanced stages, the paws swell and ulcers appear. Baths with sulfadimidine are effective against infection (15 ml per 10 liters of water).
- Dropsy. The body of the frog is swelling. Sow the diseased individual and apply Gentomicin to the water.
You can buy a spur frog for 50–700 rubles. Price depends on the store and the size of the animal.
On average, you can buy for 150-200 rubles.
It is interesting for aquarists to observe and care for a spur frog. In particular, they find the feeding process fun.
Frogs are interesting aquarium inhabitants. In addition to the spur, in aquarium conditions and contain dwarf frogs.
Often, small spur individuals are sold under the guise of a dwarf frog, which has membranes on its front paws and a pointed muzzle.
